White House tries unsuccessfully to spin Biden's 'garbage' comment about Trump's supporters
A gaffe from President Joe Biden just completely shortcircuited and undermined the coordinated Democratic and media attacks against former President Donald Trump over a supportive comedian's joke on Sunday about Puerto Rico being a "floating island of garbage," which threatened to consume Trump's campaign one week before the election.
Biden appeared to call all of Trump's supporters "garbage" in response on Tuesday, which prompted an immediate effort by the White House to spin the ill-advised critique as aimed solely at the comedian, according to Breitbart.
However, Biden's initial remark was clear, the damage was already done, and even the media wasn't buying the spin as the moment was instantly compared to failed 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's terrible "basket of deplorables" smear against Trump's backers.
Biden says Trump's supporters are "garbage"
During former President Trump's big Madison Square Garden rally in New York City on Sunday, edgy roast comedian Tony Hinchcliffe cracked a joke about Puerto Rico being a "floating island of garbage," and unsurprisingly, Democrats and the media overreacted to the quip with feigned indignation and outrage.
On Tuesday, in a conference call with Latino voting activists, President Biden thoroughly trashed Trump as a hateful and racist bigot toward Latinos as he sought to address the comedian's joke and defend Puerto Rican people from the supposed rhetorical assault.
"I don’t -- I -- I don’t know the Puerto Rican that -- that I know -- or a Puerto Rico, where I’m fr- -- in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people," Biden said. "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters -- his -- his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American."

White House tries to spin Biden's gaffe
That comment from President Biden was instantly seized upon by former President Trump and his campaign as it went viral on social media and prompted an immediate scramble from the White House as they attempted to spin the "garbage" statement as only applying to the comedian.
Indeed, a clarification post was made to Biden's X account that said, "Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage -- which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation."
Likewise, the White House released a transcript of Biden's remarks in the conference call that included a conveniently placed apostrophe in the word "supporter's" -- again implying that only the comedian and his words were at issue -- but even CNN host Kaitlan Collins wasn't buying that and her guest, Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, distanced himself from and disavowed Biden's insulting commentary, per Breitbart.
Trump and his campaign fired back
According to the Washington Examiner, former President Trump instantly responded to President Biden's "garbage" comment during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania and said, "Remember Hillary? She said ‘deplorable,’ and then she said 'irredeemable,' right? But she said deplorable. That didn’t work out. Garbage I think is worse, right? But he doesn’t know. You have to please forgive him. Please forgive him, for he not knoweth what he said."
Later, in a Truth Social post, Trump wrote, "While I am running a campaign of positive solutions to save America, Kamala Harris is running a campaign of hate. She has spent all week comparing her political opponents to the most evil mass murderers in history. Now, on top of everything, Joe Biden calls our supporters 'garbage.' You can’t lead America if you don’t love the American People. Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have shown they are both unfit to be President of the United States."
The Trump campaign also addressed the situation in a statement, as spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, "President Trump is backed by Latinos, Black voters, union workers, angel moms, law enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents, and Americans of all faiths -- and Harris, Walz, and Biden have labeled these great Americans as fascists, Nazis, and now, garbage."
"There’s no way to spin it: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don’t just hate President Trump, they despise the tens of millions of Americans who support him. Kamala does not deserve four more years. President Trump will be a president for ALL Americans," she added.
