CNN has reported that the longtime wife of Hollywood actor Eric McCormack has decided to seek a divorce.

In a petition filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court last week, Janet Leigh Holden McCormack alleged that she and her husband had "irreconcilable differences." The petition did not specify when they had separated.

Couple first met in 1994 while both were working on "Lonesome Dove: The Series"

CNN noted that the couple had been married for 26 years, with Holden McCormack first meeting her husband while working on the set of "Lonesome Dove: The Series."

Mr. McCormack recounted in an interview with The Guardian how he and his future wife encountered one another in 1994.

"She was the assistant director. I was just coming out of a relationship, and not to be trusted," McCormack explained to the newspaper.

"Janet was different. She wore jeans, drove a pick-up truck," he explained before joking that she "wasn't too keen" about getting together.

Eric McCormack is best known for appearing on the NBC sitcom "Will & Grace"

"She knew actors are a lot of work: it would be like taking your work home with you. But I managed to convince her," McCormick added. The couple went on to get married in 1997 and have one child,  21-year-old Finnigan Holden McCormack.

For his part, Mr. McCormack gained widespread fame alongside actress Debra Messing on the NBC sitcom "Will & Grace," which premiered in 1998 and ran for eight seasons. The show later had a second run between 2017 and 2020.

In addition to his time on "Will & Grace," McCormack also had roles on other television shows, including "The Andromeda Strain," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," and "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

News of McCormack's divorce led to an outpouring of support from fans on the social media platform previously known as Twitter.

McCormack is best known for playing the iconic gay character Will Truman, which led some fans to express surprise upon learning that the actor is a heterosexual in real life.
