Wife of Weezer bassist shot by LAPD, charged with attempted murder
The wife of a member of a famous 1990s alternative rock band is facing a criminal charge and hospital bills following an unusual situation that occurred in Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday.
Jillian Shriner, 51, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot by LAPD officers after she allegedly pointed a gun at them, and she has now been charged with attempted murder, Breitbart reported.
The shooting occurred as officers were searching a neighborhood for suspects who fled a hit-and-run accident on a nearby freeway and encountered Shriner, who was not involved in the freeway incident, while armed on her own property.
Armed confrontation with police unfolds
According to a LAPD news release, officers responded on Tuesday afternoon to a three-vehicle hit-and-run accident in which three occupants of one of the vehicles fled the scene on foot into a nearby neighborhood.
As officers searched the area for the suspects, they encountered Shriner in her backyard while armed with a handgun. She was allegedly told to drop the weapon numerous times but refused, and officers opened fire when she allegedly pointed her weapon at them.
Reportedly hit by gunfire, Shriner retreated into her home but later emerged and was taken into custody and transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Nobody else was injured in the shooting incident, and a 9mm handgun was recovered from the scene.
It was later determined that Shriner had not been involved in the initial car accident that prompted the search for suspects in the neighborhood, and Shriner was later booked in absentia with attempted murder.
Shot in the shoulder
Local media outlet KTLA reported that, as observed by its news helicopter flying overhead, one of the three suspects who fled the hit-and-run accident on foot was seen stripping down to his boxer shorts, jumping into a pool, and then watering some plants in a backyard in an effort to blend in and avoid detection by LAPD officers.
It was as officers closed in on that suspect that they encountered the armed Shriner in her yard, at which time the confrontation ensued, and she was shot in the shoulder before running back into her home.
Meanwhile, after officers took the initial suspect in his boxer shorts into custody, Shriner and another woman, identified as the babysitter, emerged from the home with their hands up and both were taken into custody, questioned, and subsequently released, after which Shriner was charged with attempted murder.
LAPD levels accusations
While the LAPD's news release only stated that Shriner "pointed the handgun at the officers," which precipitated the officer-involved shooting, the Los Angeles Times reported that an LAPD spokesperson later revealed that Shriner had actually fired a shot at the officers during the confrontation.
LAPD spokeswoman Jennifer Forkish told the outlet, "Our investigation revealed evidence such as a shell casing and video footage showing she repeatedly ignored police commands to disarm and that she fired her weapon at LAPD officers."
The Times further revealed that Shriner was released from custody late Wednesday evening after $1 million bail was posted, and she is scheduled to make her first court appearance on April 30.
The outlet noted that the Shriners have been married since 2005 and have two children. The husband's band, Weezer, is scheduled to perform at the Coachella music festival on Saturday
