Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer reach official divorce nearly a decade after splitting

Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer are officially single after a Los Angeles court ended the marital side of their divorce nearly a decade after their split.

A Los Angeles Superior Court restored the former couple to single status after terminating their marital status on Sept. 21, with the judgment filed on Oct. 1. The ruling closed the marriage itself while leaving other issues to proceed separately before a private judge.

Yahoo Entertainment reported that the court action arrives nearly a decade after Maguire and Meyer first announced the end of their marriage, ending a lengthy legal process that stayed open for years after the initial filing.

Meyer had requested a bifurcated judgment so the marriage could be dissolved before every other matter was settled, Page Six reporting relayed in the coverage. The court retained jurisdiction over issues raised in the original divorce petition and in Maguire’s response that the marital-status ruling did not cover. The pair had already agreed to use a private judge for what remains.

Nine years of marriage, then a long road to the decree

Maguire, best known for playing Spider-Man on screen, and Meyer married on Sept. 3, 2007. They announced their separation in October 2016 after nine years of marriage and said their priority would remain raising their children with “enduring love, respect and friendship.”

Meyer waited until October 2020 to file for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Maguire did not file his response until July 2025. In that response he sought joint legal and physical custody of their son, Otis. The couple also share a daughter, Ruby.

High-profile splits often drag on over money, custody, and public blame, a pattern also visible when a Lululemon fortune landed in divorce focus and prenup questions followed. Maguire and Meyer kept the public fight narrow and the parenting message consistent.

Meyer has repeatedly described Maguire as one of the closest people in her life. On a December 2025 appearance on The Inside Edit, she put the post-split bond in plain terms.

Meyer said, via PEOPLE:

"I now have an ex-husband who is my best friend and would do anything for me, and I would do anything for him,"

She also said the breakup came with “some big hurdles” before they reached the relationship they have today.

New engagement, a blended household, and a wildfire stay

Meyer became engaged to music executive Geoff Ogunlesi in August 2024. The couple welcomed a daughter on May 20, 2026. Meyer later shared the birth news in a Father’s Day Instagram post that showed Ogunlesi holding the baby.

Life after a finalized split can move fast, as when Bunnie Xo talked about still wanting a baby weeks after her own divorce was done. Meyer’s timeline shows engagement, a new child, and an ongoing co-parenting tie with Maguire running on parallel tracks.

In early 2025, during the Los Angeles wildfires, Meyer, Ogunlesi, and the children evacuated and stayed with Maguire. Coverage described a working friendship between Maguire and Ogunlesi that grew in that period. The former spouses’ stated aim, from the 2016 separation forward, was to keep the children’s stability ahead of the legal timetable.

Other celebrity breakups turn into open warfare over who wrecked what. Home-wrecker accusations flew in the Lochte split, and denials followed in public. Maguire and Meyer’s record, as presented in the court steps and their own comments, points the other way: slow paperwork, shared housing in a crisis, and repeated praise for the other parent.

What the court closed, and what it left open

The Sept. 21 termination and Oct. 1 filing restored both adults to single status and shut the marital portion of the case. Unresolved matters from Meyer’s petition and Maguire’s response stay under the court’s retained jurisdiction and head to the private judge the former couple already accepted.

Public details on support, property, and full custody terms remain thin beyond Maguire’s joint-custody request for Otis. The case number and the private judge’s name were not laid out in the available court summary.

Finalized celebrity divorces still spawn spin and blame campaigns, including cases where infidelity claims met public denials after a country star’s divorce became final. Maguire and Meyer’s file, by contrast, centers on irreconcilable differences, a bifurcated judgment, and a parenting line they have repeated for years.

Political families see the same hard close when a marriage ends in public view, including when Kristi Noem’s divorce news broke through family statements. The Maguire-Meyer endgame is quieter: a court stamp on single status, kids named as the priority, and leftover issues parked with a private judge.

When parents put the children’s roof and routine first, the law can finish the marriage without turning the family into a spectacle, and that still ought to be the standard.
