Rep. Lauren Boebert's 21-year-old son Tyler was arrested on multiple felony charges tied to the alleged sexual exploitation of a minor, the latest in a string of legal troubles for the young man.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office in Colorado took Tyler Boebert into custody on charges stemming from a video allegedly recorded in early 2024, when he was 18, showing him having sex with a 17-year-old girl. Court records show he faces three counts of sexual exploitation of a child and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was released the same day after posting a $10,000 bond, according to the sheriff's office.

The arrest affidavit, first reported by the New York Post, lays out the core allegation: the girl's mother contacted authorities after discovering that a video showing her daughter and Tyler Boebert having sex had been posted to Instagram. The affidavit does not identify who allegedly uploaded the footage. Tyler Boebert was 18 at the time and 11 months older than the girl, who turned 18 roughly three weeks after the video was allegedly recorded on February 1, 2024.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, the Republican congresswoman from Colorado, issued a brief statement following her son's arrest:

"I love my son. We take allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time."

Five potential felonies add to a record that already includes over 20 prior charges

Tyler Boebert could face as many as five felony counts, including charges related to the alleged intent to deal, sell, or distribute sexually exploitative material, Just The News reported. A court appearance has been scheduled for August 19.

This is not his first encounter with law enforcement. In February 2024, the same month the alleged video was recorded, Tyler Boebert was arrested in connection with an investigation into property theft and vehicle trespass. The Washington Examiner reported that he previously faced more than 20 charges related to vehicle trespass and property theft, with that case still ongoing.

He eventually pleaded guilty to attempted identity theft and was sentenced to 80 hours of community service, a $1,200 probation fee, and a two-year deferred sentence. But that case was reopened last September when counsel filed for revocation of his probation. A hearing on the deferred sentencing was scheduled for November 16.

The congresswoman addressed her son's earlier legal troubles at the time of his February 2024 arrest, saying he had been through "some very difficult, public challenges for a young man and the subject of attention that he didn't ask for." She added:

"It breaks my heart to see my child struggling and, in this situation, especially when he has been provided multiple opportunities to get his life on track. I will never give up on him, and I will continue to be there for him."

Those words carry a different weight now. The opportunities she referenced did not prevent a second arrest, this time on far more serious charges. Tyler Boebert is already scheduled for sentencing hearings next month in two separate, unrelated cases, meaning his legal calendar is growing more crowded, not less.

Boebert family's public profile makes a private crisis impossible to contain

Rep. Boebert has faced her own share of political turbulence. She missed a $1.1 trillion NDAA vote earlier this year while waiting on a call from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, drawing criticism from colleagues who questioned her priorities.

More recently, former President Trump floated a possible primary challenge against Boebert after she campaigned for Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky, adding friction to an already complicated political position.

None of that political drama compares to the gravity of what her son now faces. Sexual exploitation charges involving a minor carry serious legal consequences in Colorado, and the allegation that explicit footage was posted to a social media platform raises the stakes further. The affidavit's silence on who uploaded the video to Instagram leaves a significant factual gap that prosecutors and defense attorneys will have to address.

Tyler Boebert's case is not the only recent instance of a figure connected to Congress facing serious personal scandal. The Jackson Lahmeyer scandal and other episodes have reminded voters that proximity to political power does not insulate families from misconduct allegations, or from public scrutiny when those allegations surface.

Several key questions remain unanswered. Tyler Boebert has not made any public statement regarding the current charges. No defense attorney has been named in connection with the case. And the identity of whoever posted the video to Instagram, a central element of the exploitation charges, remains unknown even within the arrest affidavit itself.
