Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez launched an upstate New York voter tour while keeping 2028 options open, drawing Republican warnings that her socialist politics are spreading statewide.

The New York Post reported that Ocasio-Cortez kicked off the outreach swing in Buffalo before stops in Syracuse and Ithaca, complete with speaking events and a Thursday night “inactive voter training” session.

She said she will contribute $300,000 to state Democrats. Gov. Kathy Hochul is joining portions of the trip, framing the congresswoman as an energy boost for the party ahead of the midterms.

Ocasio-Cortez told reporters she is focused on the current cycle even as she leaves longer-term doors ajar. “I’m leaving all my options open,” she said. “I am running for reelection.”

Earlier she called 2028 a make-or-break year and told the New York Times that a loss in bids for her House seat, the Senate, or the White House would end her run. She now says the next presidential cycle is two years away and she is locked on today’s races.

That posture tracks earlier signals that midterm results will shape any 2028 Senate or White House decision she eventually makes.

Hochul courts the energy while AOC talks transformation

Hochul has encouraged the statewide push. On WNYC she said she asked Ocasio-Cortez and others to travel the state “to create the momentum we need, the energy around this next election.”

“I think she brings a lot of energy to the process, engages young people in particular,” Hochul added. “So I think she’ll be very well-received.”

Ocasio-Cortez matched the governor’s enthusiasm with her own mission statement. “I want to be very forthright: I’ve got our intention to transform the state of New York,” she said. “We’re not going to win by campaigning the same way.”

She pointed to weak base enthusiasm even as Democrats chase persuadable voters. “I know that part of the role that we can play is reconnecting with a lot of people who feel disappointed in what they feel has been leadership that has not been fighting hard enough for them.”

At a Thursday rally she praised Hochul’s AI moratorium, sanctuary-state measures, and money steered to New York City for childcare. She called Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Hochul’s Republican opponent, “profoundly dangerous” and said the choice is “not just about the lesser of two evils.”

She did not name Hochul or the longtime Democrats on the November statewide ticket while making those remarks.

DSA strongholds supply the welcome mat

The itinerary lands in friendly turf. Buffalo and Syracuse both elected Democratic Socialists of America members to local and state Assembly seats in the June elections. Ithaca, home to Cornell University in Tompkins County, already has several DSA members on its city council.

Tompkins was one of only two New York counties that backed Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic presidential primary. Maxwell Bowman, co-chair of Buffalo’s DSA chapter, said Hochul plans to campaign alongside Ocasio-Cortez and called for a party overhaul.

“The Democratic Party in New York State has been a corporate party serving money interests for a very long time. And I think we need to change those politics,”

Bowman said.

Those same socialist networks have already shown internal strain as Democratic Socialists fracture over 2028 endorsement fights while presidential speculation around Ocasio-Cortez grows.

Republicans and local Democrats push back

State Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra did not hold back on X. “We warned you about NYC socialism spreading upstate,” he posted. “Turns out it’s Kathy Hochul driving the bus.”

Erie County Republican Chairman Michael Kracker said the visit is about power inside the Democratic Party itself.

“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is coming to Erie County to establish herself as the true leader of the New York Democratic Party, and local Democrats are falling in line, embracing her extreme socialist agenda without question,”

Kracker said. “They don’t have to go along with it.”

Former Golden Gloves champion Joe “Baby Joe” Mesi, a lifelong Democrat from Buffalo, rejected the pitch outright. “The party I know fights for working people, not for radical politics that hurt them,” he said. “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t speak for me, and she doesn’t speak for the Buffalo I grew up in.”

Ocasio-Cortez has also framed identity questions as part of any future calculus, a theme that surfaced when she cast race and gender as central to 2028 considerations even while insisting the immediate focus remains this year’s races.

Options stay open while the base gets a reboot

The tour’s stated goal is practical: target inactive Democratic voters and expand reach in battleground races before the midterms. Ocasio-Cortez argues the old playbook no longer works and that disappointed base voters need a harder fight from leadership.

At the same time she keeps every 2028 lane available, House, Senate, or White House, while declaring she is running for reelection now. The combination lets her build statewide muscle and test messaging without locking in a higher bid.

Personal branding has long mixed with the political for the congresswoman, whether the subject is dating boundaries after a split or other private choices she has chosen to air. Voters watching the upstate swing will decide whether the policy product matches the energy Hochul is selling.

New York taxpayers and working families outside the city already live with the results of sanctuary rules, heavy regulation, and one-party habits. A tour that exports the same model farther north does not change that record; it only advertises it.
