GOP senators ready to intervene if Mayorkas impeachment trial is tabled by Democrats

President Joe Biden isn't the only one in his administration facing possible impeachment.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' impeachment proceedings are nearing the final stage in being transmitted from the House to the Senate, and Republicans are working overtime to ensure that a full impeachment trial is on the docket.

According to Fox News, a group of Republican senators have pulled zero punches in making sure that Mayorkas is held accountable at an upcoming impeachment trial in the upper chamber.

The Fox News exclusive noted that a group of 12 senators "are gearing up to prevent all legislative business in the Senate from going forward if they don't get a full trial into the articles of impeachment against" Mayorkas.

What's going on?

A half dozen sources reportedly informed Fox News that the group of 12 senators will obstruct all business in the upper chamber if Mayorkas doesn't receive a full impeachment trial.

There were concerns regarding the outcome of the trial, in that Democrats were reportedly prepping to shut it down as quickly as possible before heading out for the weekend.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was convinced by Republican senators to hold off on transmitting the articles of impeachment to the Senate this week so as to avoid it being shut down by Democrats.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), at a recent press conference, noted that once the articles are transmitted to the Senate, points of order will need to be agreed to by both sides.

"We go about a process to negotiate the precise procedural metes and bounds of this particular impeachment proceedings," Lee told reporters.

Fox News noted:

At the same conference, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., noted that Senate president pro tempore Patty Murray, D-Wash., would preside over the proceedings. "She doesn't have to recognize us. That's entirely possible that Senator Schumer will tell her only to recognize him and we won't even have a chance to make a point of order," he said.

Strategy in place

Republican aides told Fox News that it only takes one senator to hold up basic procedural votes in the upper chamber, and if Democrats attempt to table Mayorkas' impeachment, several senators are ready and willing to hold up official business for as long as it takes.

Numerous Republican senators, at a recent lunch for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, seemed ready and willing to do whatever it takes to make sure Mayorkas is held accountable at trial.

House Republicans impeached Mayorkas over his disastrous handling of the chaotic illegal immigration crisis at the southern U.S. border.

The issue is expected to play a major role in the upcoming November election, and one can bet that an impeachment of a top White House Cabinet member will cause nothing less than severe headaches for President Joe Biden's 2024 reelection campaign.
