Ocasio-Cortez says she won't seek top spot on House Oversight Committee
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said Monday that she has decided not to seek the top spot on the House Oversight Committee as Rep. Jerry Connolly (D-VA) steps away from the role.
Connolly defeated Ocasio-Cortez for the spot in January, and she said she doesn't think she could beat another more senior representative for the spot this time, either.
“It’s actually clear to me that the underlying dynamics in the caucus have not shifted with respect to seniority as much as I think would be necessary, and so I believe I’ll be staying put at Energy and Commerce,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters.
She did not say who she thinks should win the position.
"No vacancy" yet
“There’s no vacancy. There’s no official race yet, so I won’t comment on that, and I want to be respectful of ranking member Connolly,” she said.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) has not shown the same respect, and has been blanketing her party with text messages and emails, as well as hosting conversations on the House floor.
Crockett is saying she is "made for the moment," and making it clear she plans to go after President Donald Trump forcefully.
She told POLITICO in a text message that, even though there isn’t a vacancy yet, “knowing that Rep Connolly doesn’t plan to seek re-election & knowing that our oversight powers are broad, I’m ready to shine a light on the very dark things taking place in our country under this administration.”
At 44 years old, Crockett is only 9 years older than Ocasio-Cortez. Putting someone so young in the top spot would signify a shift in a more progressive direction for the party.
"Kidnapping" accusations
Crockett has been very vocal recently about the Trump administration, comparing deportations to "kidnapping" people and claiming that illegal immigrants are being deprived of their civil rights.
“As far as I’m concerned, you randomly kidnapping folk and you throwing them out of the country against their civil rights, against their constitutional rights,” Crockett said in an Instagram video recently.
“And, frankly, how would they feel if some other country decided that they were gonna just start throwing people randomly in our country? Like that is absolutely insane,” she added.
Never mind that she sounds like an idiot in these comments. Illegal immigrants don't have constitutional or civil rights, and the U.S. is not "throwing people randomly" into other countries.
If this is what passes for leadership in the Democrat party, they are in a very sad state of affairs.
No wonder they can't win elections even with thousands of illegal immigrants voting.
