Trump backtracks on renaming of Veterans Day
It now appears that President Donald Trump will no longer be renaming Veterans Day.
The Daily Mail reports that the White House has appeared to have backed away from this idea.
The turnaround came a day after Trump made a strong push to rename Veterans Day, calling it "Victory Day."
We'll begin by getting you up to speed.
"Victory Day"
Trump launched the idea of "Victory Day" in a social media message that he posted on Thursday, May 1, 2025.
He began:
Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II. I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I.
The president went on to say that this will be a way for America to "start celebrating our victories again."
He wrote:
We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!
The idea received a lot of attention and was covered by most news outlets. But by the following day, it appears that the White House decided to back away from the idea.
"Just an additional proclamation"
On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about the name change, and it was here that she suggested that the name change will not be official.
"We are not renaming Veteran's Day. It will just be an additional proclamation that goes out on that day," Leavitt said.
This, of course, leaves a lot of questions unanswered, such as why the sudden change, a change the came the day after the president put out a very strong message stating that he is "hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I."
The White House has not provided an answer to this question, but one could probably make a guess that is not too far from the truth. If Trump were to rename Veterans Day, he would essentially be getting rid of it, and that wouldn't be a good thing to do for our veterans.
We'll have to see if the White House confirms that this is the reason why Trump did not officially rename those days. For now, it is just a guess.
