DA Alvin Bragg's star witness and former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen's testimony during the New York "hush money" trial backfired in a major way last week.

Cohen's statements on the stand were stunning, to say the least, and at one point he even admitted to stealing money from the Trump Organization.

According to Fox News, the Department of Justice has been urged by high-ranking congressman to take immediate action to prosecute Cohen regarding the bombshell revelations that were made during his testimony.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, in a letter to the Justice Department, urged U.S. Attorney General to take "immediate action" in going after Cohen, calling him a proven "pathological liar."

What's going on?

Emmer, among others, wants Garland to move swiftly on a number of criminal referrals from congressional committees related to a number of alleged lies told by Cohen.

Fox News noted:

Emmer also demanded information on top Manhattan prosecutor Matthew Colangelo, who worked as a senior Justice Department official in the Biden administration before joining Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's team.

Emmer laid out the reasons for his urging of the DOJ to prosecute the former Trump "fixer."

"In November 2018, Mr. Cohen pled guilty to lying to the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence," Emmer wrote.

He added, "Since then, he has been referred to the U.S. Department of Justice on at least three separate occasions by Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and House Committee on the Judiciary for committing perjury and knowingly making false statements during his testimony at a congressional hearing and deposition."

There have been multiple criminal referrals related to Cohen's alleged lies sent by multiple members of Congress.

Emmer doubles down

In an X post, Emmer reiterated that he believes Cohen needs to be held accountable for his actions and made a reference to what many believe -- that the case against Trump is nothing more than a "sham" and a political witch hunt.

"We’re going to use every resource at our disposal to hold the DOJ's feet to the fire until Convict Cohen is behind bars and Americans get the answers they deserve about the shady characters who are attempting to pull off the greatest sham in U.S. history," Emmer wrote.

Only time will tell if Garland takes the criminal referrals seriously, but one wouldn't be advised to bet on such happenings.
