Kamala Harris to be joined by VP pick at Philadelphia rally
Kamala Harris will unveil her running mate next week at a campaign event in Philadelphia, as the Democrat party prepares for her coronation in Chicago.
The presumptive Democratic nominee for president is widely expected to choose a white man from one of the swing states, part of an effort to "balance" the ticket and broaden her appeal outside the liberal base.
Harris' team says she is still making a decision, but top names include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
VP announcement
Harris is making a VP decision on an unusually fast timeline, thanks to her late entry into the race.
Her presidential bid has received fawning news coverage, which Democrats hope will carry her through an unusually short campaign.
While Harris has solidified the liberal base, many expect her to have difficulty winning support in pivotal Rust Belt states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin.
She will begin campaigning with her running mate next Tuesday in Pennsylvania's capital, which has led to speculation that the state's governor, Josh Shapiro, is the pick.
Some Democrats think Shapiro could help Harris in Pennsylvania, where she has already faced attacks over her past support of a fracking ban.
"The vice president has a very deeply personal decision to make right now: who she wants to run with, who she wants to govern with, and who can be by her side when she has to make the toughest decisions for the American people. I trust she will make that decision on her own terms when she is ready," Shapiro said.
A coronation...
Since Joe Biden suspended his re-election bid and endorsed her, Harris has rapidly won the support of her party and its media allies, despite not winning a single primary vote.
While the party has united behind her, there are still lingering signs of division. Shapiro, who is Jewish, has faced backlash from the Democratic Party's anti-Semitic wing over his support of Israel.
Barack Obama's former attorney general Eric Holder is managing Harris' vetting process.
Harris is officially the only candidate to qualify for the party's virtual roll call, which begins Thursday.
After hitting Philly on Tuesday, Harris will continue with stops in western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, Savannah, Phoenix and Las Vegas, Politico reported.
