Harris continues to avoid the press

Vice President Kamala Harris - despite the fact that she is now the Democratic Party's 2024 presidential nominee - continues to avoid the press.

Fox News reports that, since becoming the nominee, she has only spent about two minutes speaking with the press.

The big question, of course, is why?

Many, including former President Donald Trump, believe that the answer is that Harris simply cannot handle speaking with reporters. This of course raises the question of how could she run the country if she cannot even hold a press conference?

The details

Harris has had numerous public outings since becoming the Democrats' presidential nominee. But, she has had hardly any interactions with the press.

She gave her first unscripted remarks, after becoming the nominee, during the prisoner swap that freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and Marine Corps veteran Paul Whelan.

Suffice it to say, that it did not go well. This is what Harris managed to get out:

This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy and strengthening alliances.

Harris has been making numerous campaign stops, but it has been clear that her speeches are carefully scripted and that she rigorously sticks to the script. Take a look, for example, at this.

Harris's only exchange with the press occurred on Thursday. It lasted for less than two minutes.

A stark contrast

In many ways, what we are seeing from Harris is similar to what we have seen from President Joe Biden and his White House. The administration has faced significant scrutiny for infrequent and heavily scripted press interactions.

There is no greater contrast to this than Trump and his administration. Everyone can remember the frequent and unscripted press interactions of the Trump administration - including of Trump himself.

Trump, in fact, continues to interact with the press despite constantly being constantly attacked by reporters. One of the latest interactions occurred on Thursday afternoon at Mar-a-Lago.

There, in stark contrast to Harris's less than two-minute encounter with the press, Trump spoke for more than an hour, and, for the overwhelming majority of that time, the former president fielded questions - including difficult questions - from reporters. The entire press conference can be watched here.

At one point, Trump commented on Harris's lack of interaction with the press. He said:

She’s not doing a news conference. You know why? She’s not doing it because she can’t do a news conference.
