A South Carolina Republican member of congress was rushed to hospital this week after he collapsed during an event. 

According to UPI, an announcement was posted to Rep. Joe Wilson's personal X account which explained that he was "being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday evening.

Doctors say Wilson "experienced stroke-like symptoms"

South Carolina state Attorney General Alan Wilson is the congressman's son, and he later provided an additional update on Rep. Wilson's condition in a social media post of his own.

I just spoke to my mom who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms. I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals

Ukrainian ambassador stresses the importance of CPR

Meanwhile, The Hill reported that Wilson's collapse occurred as he was attending a celebration of Ukraine's Independence Day in the nation's capital.

The website noted that Wilson was quickly administered CPR, a fact which was highlighted by Ukrainian ambassador Oksana Markarova.

"It reminds me that we all have to learn how to do CPR, we in Ukraine, now, unfortunately know it because we have to do it on a daily basis, unfortunately, but even in other countries we have to be more resilient," Markarova was quoted as saying.

Markarova added that she and the Ukrainian embassy staff will "keep praying that our friend will be fine and wish speedy recovery to our friend."

Wilson gained national prominence for 2009 outburst

UPI observed that Wilson serves as a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and is running for reelection against Democratic challenger David Robinson II.

The 77-year-old Charleston native was first elected to Congress a quarter century ago and gained national prominence in late 2009.

Wilson sparked controversy when he interrupted a nationally televised joint address to Congress by President Barack Obama.

He loudly accused the president of lying about whether illegal aliens would receive tax-payer funded healthcare, something Wilson later apologized for.
