By now, most know about Vice President Kamala Harris' relationship with former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown, a political power-player in his day. 

Thanks in part to her relationship and connection to Brown, Harris was able to land several lucrative gigs in her younger years that would eventually put her in a position to become an attorney general and ultimately a senator from California.

According to the Daily Mail, new footage emerged this week that some found disturbing. The footage was from a 1995 special report on Brown by Dianne Sawyer, during which one of the reporters asked if Harris was Brown's daughter.

The special report on Brown noted that he was "notorious for his flamboyant lifestyle, flashy clothes, fancy parties," and "fine women."

What's going on?

When Harris met Brown, he was easily the most powerful politician in the state of California, and being close to him almost certainly meant a career-boosting opportunity.

Harris was only 29 when she began dating Brown, who was already 60. The two were reportedly quite close for a time.

The clip, in which Harris was asked if she was Brown's daughter as the two attended what appeared to be a swanky party, quickly went viral across social media.

The Daily Mail noted:

Her relationship with Brown sparked San Francisco gossip columns to muse about Harris and Brown possibly getting married. But the mayor-elect ended the relationship that December after the election.

Brown continues speaking about Harris, although she has tried to distance herself from the mayor since she first ran for political office.

Brown, 90, has made several headlines in recent weeks in the wake of Harris being crowned the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

Social media reacts

Users across social media had plenty to say about the 1995 footage of Brown and Harris.

"Kamala was the original S0r0s D.A. that started the destruction of San Francisco into the cesspool it is today....thanks to Willie Brown's endorsement," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Note the corruption too. Brown gave her a BMW while naming Harris to 3 boards that were typically reserved for senior officials like judges, state senators and college deans."

Brown had recently urged President Joe Biden to resign and give the presidency to Harris, which he believes would make it easier for her to beat Donald Trump in November.
