DANIEL VAUGHAN: Kamala Harris Can't Escape Biden's Shadow
What started as Biden's gaffe calling all Trump supporters "garbage" has turned into far more. The Associated Press has two sources and a paper trail proving that the White House Press Office edited the transcript of Biden's call to make things look better. Not only did Biden step all over Kamala Harris' big speech in D.C., but he now has the White House embroiled in a cover-up.
For Donald Trump, Biden's garbage comments were an early Christmas gift. Trump deftly turned the attack around as a laugh line, showing up in a garbage truck with his camping logo. Trump supporters have jumped on the trend, dressing up as various forms of "trash" or "garbage" for Halloween. In short, Trump turned Biden's gaffe into one of the last images of this race.
Turning back to the White House, there are real questions about what the press office is doing there. After Biden made his remarks and the media firestorm started, the White House press office demanded a quick transcript to explain what happened. Before stenographers could agree to any changes, the White House press office released a transcript and claimed anyone pointing out the obvious in Biden's statements was spreading misinformation.
According to the Associated Press, "The supervisor, in the email, called the press office's handling of the matter 'a breach of protocol and spoilation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices.'" The email continued:
"If there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently," the supervisor wrote, adding, "Our Stenography Office transcript — released to our distro, which includes the National Archives — is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff."
House Republicans were already demanding the White House turn over documents for what they did in this situation. And the AP notes, "Stefanik and Comer said the action could be in violation of the Presidential Records Act of 1978."
In less than a day, we've gone from a gaffe from Biden to Congress talking about law violations. In truth, though, this isn't the first time that the White House has gotten credibly accused of rewriting a transcript to help Biden. The entirety of Biden's time in office has coincided with stenographers working overtime to understand what new thing he's said on a given day.
Meanwhile, Trump is now campaigning on that gaffe, which brings Joe Biden and his basement-level approval ratings back to the front and center of this campaign. Does that mean this will swing the election? Hardly. It does, however, harden the lines of why people are voting in one direction or another. If you dislike Biden, this was a reminder of why you dislike him.
Harris struggles to keep any distance between herself and the Biden administration. Democrats are trying to run on the duel messages of "we're not going back," when the thing people have right now is Biden.
It's like watching the Kool-Aid man crash through the election walls with Joe Biden's face prominently seen for everyone. It's just a reminder of everything that's happened in the last four years.
The thornier question is why the stenographer's office, these witnesses, and the White House's emails got leaked now. This kind of email could have been sent at any time in the last four years, but we're getting it now. The exact moment when tensions between the Biden and Harris camps is getting worse. Biden made those comments practically while Harris gave her closing arguments. And Biden blotted out the sun with his blunder.
Axios is already reporting on tensions between Biden and Harris in the White House. Biden has started going out and doing his own campaigning. At the same time, the Harris campaign would likely prefer to find a literal basement and keep Biden there until Election Day. Whoever thought it was a good idea to get Biden on Zoom the same night Harris delivers a closing argument either hates her or is the worst strategist in existence.
The possibility of this becoming another legal headache for the Biden White House won't make Harris any happier. Harris is running a poor campaign, the White House isn't helping, and Democrats are afraid they have turnout issues.
Harris can't escape Biden's shadow. It looms over every aspect of this race. Democrats thought they'd kicked Biden out of the picture, but here we are, just days away from Election Day, and Biden is the one dominating election coverage.
