Sotomayor will not give into leftist calls for her retirement
It appears that Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor will not be giving into those leftists who are calling for her to retire from the U.S. Supreme Court.
This is according to a new report from ABC News.
The outlet cites "sources close to the senior liberal justice" for its report.
Sotomayor herself, though, has not released a public statement on the matter.
Here's what is going on:
Following President-Elect Donald Trump's landslide victory in the 2024 presidential election, some members of the political left have begun calling for Sotomayor to resign. These Democrats are concerned about repeating what happened with the late Justice Ruth Bade Ginsburg.
The reader will probably remember that Ginsburg also was ordered by the political left to resign so that outgoing President Barack Obama could replace her with another liberal justice. Ginsberg, however, refused.
Instead, she ended up leaving the court when a Republican was president, which resulted in her being replaced with a conservative justice.
The political left does not want to repeat this mistake, which is why some are now calling upon Sotomayor to resign. The fact is that there have been reports that have called attention to her health problems, and it would be a nightmare scenario for Democrats if Sotomayor, for health reasons, had to resign during Trump's incoming administration.
This would give Trump the opportunity to flip yet another liberal seat on the Supreme Court.
It's not happening
If ABC's reporting is accurate, then it appears that, like Ginsburg, Sotomayor will not be stepping down.
Per the outlet:
Despite urgent speculation in liberal legal circles and some talk among Democratic senators of potentially outright urging Justice Sonia Sotomayor to resign, sources close to the senior liberal justice have told ABC News that she is not expected to step down in the middle of the term because of the 2024 election results.
One, of course, never really knows how accurate these anonymous sources are. But, there are good reasons to believe that this one is correct.
As ABC notes:
Forcing out Sotomayor, assuming she would agree to go, could be politically risky, and a successful confirmation before Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025, logistically impossible. Those realities have seemed to be sinking in among some key Democratic players.
This would include, among others, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who has condemned the idea. We'll see if other Democrats follow suit, or whether they will continue to try to force Sotomayor out.
