Lawmakers request access to ethics probe on Gaetz

Several lawmakers are seeking access to the results of a Congressional ethics probe made by U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).

This comes, according to Fox News, as Gaetz has been nominated by President-Elect Donald Trump to be the next Attorney General of the United States.

Gaetz has already resigned from Congress.

The big question, though, is whether this nomination will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, and it is already looking like there are many lawmakers who are going to try to prevent this from happening.

Here's what is going on

The House Ethics Committee has launched a multi-year investigation of Gaetz, according to Fox, over "allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor and illicit drug use."

The results of the investigation have yet to be released. But, bits and pieces of information have been leaked to the public.

The New York Post, for example, reports:

A woman told the House ethics panel investigating Matt Gaetz that she saw the former congressman having sex with a minor at a Florida party, her lawyer said Friday. “My client testified to the House Ethics Committee that she witnessed Rep. Gaetz having sex with a minor at a house party in Orlando in 2017,” attorney Joel Leppard told NBC News.

Gaetz has denied all of these claims.

Now, however, several members of Congress are requesting access to the results of the investigation. They say that the release of this information is necessary for them to properly consider Trump's nomination of Gaetz to the Attorney General position.

Gaetz is under the gun

Among those calling for the release of the investigation results is U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL).

A spokesperson for him said:

There is longstanding precedent for releasing ethics investigation materials after a member resigns, whether in the House or Senate. The now former congressman shouldn’t be able to resign away an ethics investigation involving allegations of grave misconduct, especially when he will be nominated to be our country’s top law enforcement officer.

Some have accused Gaetz of resigning from Congress in an attempt to distance himself from the ethics investigation, since the investigation stopped when he did so.

It is unclear how this is all going to play out.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has made his position on the matter clear. He said:

I’m going to strongly request that the Ethics Committee not issue the report because that is not the way we do things in the House, and I think that would be a terrible precedent to set.
