Trump says Mexico has agreed to stop flow of illegal aliens after tariff threat
Remember when Joe Biden said that he needed Congress to seal the border? That he was totally helpless to do anything to stop the endless flow of migrants that he unleashed?
Clearly, Biden never read The Art of the Deal. In a statement Wednesday, President-elect Trump announced an agreement with Mexico to stop the flow of immigrants across the southern border.
The deal comes after Trump threatened to slap a 25% tariff on Mexican imports on his first day in office.
Trump makes a deal
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said he had a "wonderful conversation" with Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum.
"Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border. We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs. It was a very productive conversation!"
"Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately. THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!" Trump added in another post.
Prior to their conversation, Sheinbaum - Mexico's recently elected, socialist president - sent Trump a condescending letter pledging to retaliate against Trump's tariff threats.
She struck a more conciliatory tone in a post on X acknowledging their "excellent" phone call, as she stressed increased "collaboration."
"We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl," she wrote.
The power of leverage
Sheinbaum can act tough, but she cannot argue with the power of U.S. markets. Trump knows what he's doing. He's using America's economic might as leverage.
Trump used similar pressure tactics during his first term to successfully squeeze Latin American countries to cooperate with controlling immigration.
By stark contrast, Biden and Kamala Harris prioritized sending billions in foreign aid south of the border to address the "root causes" of immigration. As everyone knows, this "strategy" was a complete failure.
Trump is not even president yet, and he's already showing what can get done with a president who is tough and serious about solving a problem.
