The First Family is mourning the death of Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India.

Both President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden released a statement on Singh's passing on Friday, Dec. 27, 2024.

The statement can be read in its entirety here.

First, though, we'll get you up to speed on Singh's passing.

Ex-India prime minister dies at 92

The Associated Press reports that Singh died on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.

Per the outlet:

Manmohan Singh, the former Indian prime minister widely regarded as the architect of the country’s economic reform program, was cremated after a state funeral on Saturday as politicians and the public mourned his death. The veteran leader, who was also credited for a landmark nuclear deal with the United States, died late Thursday at age 92.

The Associated Press goes on to describe how "Singh’s body was taken Saturday morning to the headquarters of his Congress party in New Delhi, where party leaders and activists paid tributes to him and chanted 'Manmohan Singh lives forever.'"

Singh's body was then transported to a crematorium.

India's current president, Draupadi Murmu, and prime minister, Narendra Modi, referred to Singh as one of the country's "most distinguished leaders."

The Biden's pay tribute

Jill and Joe Biden released a statement of their own paying tribute to Singh on Friday.

The statement begins, "Jill and I join the people of India in grieving the loss of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh."

The Bidens go on to write:

The unprecedented level of cooperation between the United States and India today would not have been possible without the Prime Minister’s strategic vision and political courage. From forging the U.S.-India Civil Nuclear Agreement to helping launch the first Quad between Indo-Pacific partners, he charted pathbreaking progress that will continue to strengthen our nations—and the world—for generations to come. He was a true statesman. A dedicated public servant. And above all, he was a kind and humble person.

Biden then goes on to relate a personal anecdote regarding a meetup that he had with Singh back in 2008, when Biden was the U.S. vice president. Biden also recalled meetups that he had with Singh in 2009 and 2013.

The Bidens concluded:

During this difficult time, we recommit to this vision to which Prime Minister Singh dedicated his life. And Jill and I send our deepest condolences to former First Lady Gursharan Kaur, their three children, and all the people of India.
