Donald Trump is sharing high praise of Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman after a surprise meeting at Mar-A-Lago.

Fetterman's kowtowing is another sign of Trump's building momentum during the transition - as he prepares for a second term with a more cooperative Democratic opposition than he had last time.

Trump said that Fetterman impressed him with his "common sense." That's a term Trump has often used to distinguish his own political philosophy from the usual conservative offering.

"He's a commonsense person. He's not liberal or conservative. He's just a commonsense person, which is beautiful," Trump said.

Fetterman meets with Trump

Although elected to Congress as a hard-left progressive, Fetterman has worked to shed his liberal reputation, emerging as an occasional critic of his party, and to some, a surprising voice of restraint.

Since Trump won back Pennsyvania on his path back to the White House, Fetterman has been eager to show voters that he's not just a partisan Democrat.

"President Trump invited me to meet, and I accepted. I’m the senator for all Pennsylvanians — not just Democrats in Pennsylvania,” Fetterman said about the meeting.

Perhaps more than any other Democrat, Fetterman has signaled the party's need to seek compromise with Trump, who is returning to office with newfound popularity after Democrats spent nearly a decade trying to tear him down.

Trump's incredible resurgence has left many Democrats resigned, as former critics of his look to get on his good side.

Fetterman has co-sponsored the tough-on-the border Laken Rily Act, which advanced in the Senate with overwhelming bi-partisan support last week, in a possible sign that Democrats realize they need to moderate on immigration.

“It’s been amazing, and there’s been cooperation within the Republicans and a lot of the Democrats. I will say that Sen. Fetterman was very impressive to me, really impressive,” Trump said.

"Very impressive"

Trump offered a glowing review of Fetterman, crediting him with a "fascinating" conversation on important issues. The two talked about the border, jobs for steelworkers and Israel.

“It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump said of Fetterman and his wife Gisele.

Fetterman's vocal support of Israel in the wake of Hamas' October 7 attack has taken many by surprise, including Trump, who said he initially saw Fetterman as a liberal.

“He really was impressive, and I’m glad I got to speak to him. And he loves Pennsylvania, and he loves our country,” Trump said.
