Congressman introduces a bill that would give Trump a third term
A congressman just introduced a bill, in the U.S. House of Representatives, that would allow President Donald Trump to serve a third term in the White House.
Breitbart News reports that U.S. Rep. Any Ogles (R-TN), introduced the legislation this past week.
It is going to be an uphill battle to get the bill passed because it would require an amendment to the Twenty-Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
This is the amendment which states, in part, "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice."
The details:
Fox News explains how it is that Ogles's legislation would change the Constitution.
If the amendment were to succeed, then the Constitution would read:
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.
Interestingly, this would preclude former President Barack Obama from being able to run for another term. This is because he has already served two consecutive terms.
Trump, however, has not, for he lost in the 2020 presidential election.
It seems unlikely that this bill will have any chance of success, but time will tell if this is indeed the case.
Ogles makes the case for a third Trump term
In introducing the bill, Ogles explained why it is that he believes the Constitution ought to be changed and Trump ought to have the opportunity to serve a third term.
He said, Trump "has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal."
Ogles added, "To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs."
Newsweek explains:
The process of actually changing an amendment or passing a new amendment requires monumental national support: The 5th Amendment, which lays out the process, states that two-thirds of both houses of Congress must support the proposal of an amendment or two-thirds of state legislatures must call a convention to propose an amendment.
If the resolution were to meet these requirements, it would then require "ratification by the legislatures of three-fourths of states or 'by conventions in three-fourths thereof.'"
