Czech Olympic skier Tereza Nova in 'medically induced coma' following brain injury suffered in training crash
An Olympic skier suffered a horrific injury after falling during a training run ahead of a major event.
Czech skier Tereza Nova, 26, is barely alive in a medically induced coma at a hospital in Germany, Fox News reported.
Doctors placed Nova in a coma after emergency brain surgery was performed to help ease brain swelling suffered in the violent crash.
Skier in a "medically induced coma" after brain surgery
The BBC reported that Nova was seriously injured while making a final training run on Friday at the German ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen ahead of Saturday's World Cup downhill event on Saturday.
The Czech ski federation said in a statement, "We are all thinking of Tereza and wish her a speedy recovery and lots of strength."
"She underwent surgery to reduce brain swelling at the Murnau hospital and will remain in a medically induced coma for as long as the medical team deems necessary," the team added.
Not the only skier injured on tough course
According to the Daily Mail, Nova's accident occurred while she was making a final practice run down what is called the Kandahar course at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen resort.
That particular course is said to be known for its "steep descent and menacing speed," and Nova was not the only skier to suffer an injurious fall during preparations for Saturday's event.
DPA reported that Austrian skier Nina Ortlieb broke her right leg while trying to descend the slope on Saturday in the second major crash of the weekend.
She was heard screaming in pain after the fall and was moved via a rescue sled to a helicopter that took her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
In a social media post, Ortlieb said, "When your nightmare becomes reality. Just broke my right leg again. Can't find the right words at the moment, but very thankful for all the support and messages."
Former Olympic competitor
Fox News reported Nova was a star for the Czech ski team who'd competed in four races during the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.
Nova's best events at those Games were the alpine combined and the mixed team parallel, where she finished 14th in each. She also competed in the women's downhill and the women's Super-G, where she placed 28th and 33rd, respectively.
The skier has been competing internationally since 2014 and has participated in multiple Junior World Championship and World Cup events over the years.
