DANIEL VAUGHAN: Greta Thunberg Gets Mugged By Reality
Sometimes a story is too perfect and tickles your political priors so well that you don't want to fact-check it. We got one of those this week when Greta Thunberg and her merry band of useful idiots learned a hard lesson: the "Free Palestine" movement isn't all rainbows and butterflies - they got mugged by reality.
In stories first published overseas and then reprinted in English-language outlets, we saw a bit of "woke on woke" violence. Greta Thunberg abruptly left the leadership of her "flotilla" convoy that had tried to "break" the Israeli blockade against Hamas.
This is the same group that was caught by Israeli vessels a few months ago, given food and water, and shipped out of the region. Viral pictures and videos appeared to show Thunberg pretending to be arrested at an airport.
They also claimed drones hit their ships. But surveillance footage showed the group setting fire to their own boats and faking an international news event. We're not dealing with the brightest light bulbs out there.
Now we can add another: coming face to face with extremist Palestinian beliefs, in alignment with Hamas.
We learn from reports that there are tensions in the camp. "[P]olitical differences have allegedly plagued the leadership of the [Global Sumud Flotilla's (GSF)], with reports that Khaled Boujemaa, the Tunisian coordinator of the convoy, defected after learning about the presence of queer activists on board."
One of the issues is "the participation of activist Saif Ayadi on the flotilla, a 'communist queer militant.'" The Muslims in this flotilla were not that happy with these radical leftists getting included. They were blunt:
Mariem Meftah, took to social media to voice her opposition to LGBTQ+ activists' taking advantage' of the pro-Palestine cause, one that is 'sacred to us as Muslims'.
'Everyone's sexual orientation is a private matter... But being a "queer" activist means touching on society's values and taking a path that risks placing my children and loved ones in a situation we reject,' she wrote, according to a translation.
'I refuse to have my son offered a sex change at school… I call on everyone to save the situation and repair the mistake made against the people who gave their blood so that this flotilla can see the light of day.'
Another activist added, "So why involve in it dubious activists serving other agendas that do not concern us and have nothing to do with Gaza?"
The great liberal omni-cause is dead. The left has talked itself into standing on a great principle on Gaza. But as conservatives have pointed out for years, Hamas and its ilk would kill all the radical progressives who claim to stand for Palestinians.
It's the definition of a chicken demanding a tiger be set free in the hen house. The obvious thing is going to happen, no matter what the seed-brained chicken claims to be true.
Thunberg quickly stepped down and tried to downplay the differences. But these differences are critical. Only in Israel, and the West at large, can anyone take on the beliefs of a "communist queer militant" and not get legally killed for those beliefs.
In the West, we deplore events like Charlie Kirk's assassination. But in the rule of Hamas, a "communist queer militant"would be executed according to law in a trumped-up kangaroo court.
If you don't believe me, just take a look at footage coming out of Gaza this week. The executions were held in a public manner, with charges read out and a cheering crowd, while three men were killed on the spot in a brutal and cold-blooded fashion.
It's the same mindset and laws that went in and murdered thousands on October 7, targeting a festival that included gays, lesbians, and more. Thunberg and her merry band of radical left-wing idiots are siding with the murderers.
What they're learning this week, in a hard lesson, is that they do not belong in a merry cause with people across the board. They're useful pawns of those supporting the mission of Hamas, which seeks the eradication of Jews and anyone else who doesn't hold their extremist beliefs.
Palestine is not the grand cause to unite all liberal coalitions. Those who claim to believe in a fantasy that doesn't exist. Thunberg got that lesson up close and personal, and she quickly quit that boat and rolled her little suitcase to the safest place she could find.
The great Irving Kristol once remarked, "A neoconservative is a liberal who's been mugged by reality. A neoliberal is a liberal who's been mugged by reality but has refused to press charges." We'll get to see how Thunberg and her crew respond to this.
Nothing suggests that they're smart enough to fully comprehend what happened this week. But to conservatives, this was predictable. Hamas supporters hold the same beliefs and seek the same end. Thunberg is a chicken clucking in front of a tiger cage.
