Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar revises stance on fatal ICE shooting

Minneapolis is once again at the center of a law enforcement controversy after a fatal shooting involving an ICE agent and a local resident last week.

Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has shifted her account of the incident involving the death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old poet and mother of three, with Omar initially denying the vehicle posed a threat but later acknowledging on Sunday’s CNN *Face The Nation* that Good’s SUV was moving when the shots were fired, as seen in multiple videos including Ross’s own footage released on Friday.

Omar’s Changing Narrative on Shooting

The public debate over this tragic event has intensified, with questions lingering about whether Ross acted in self-defense or with unnecessary force, the Daily Mail reported.

Omar’s initial statement to CNN’s Jake Tapper, made four days before her Sunday appearance, pushed back against claims of self-defense by the Trump administration.

“That's an incredibly delusional statement,” Omar told Tapper, dismissing the notion that Ross was in danger as videos showed no agent being struck or falling.

Video Evidence Sparks Public Debate

Yet, after Ross’s phone footage emerged on Friday, showing his camera jerking as Good drove off, Omar adjusted her narrative on Sunday, admitting the vehicle was in motion.

Describing the videos, Omar painted a sympathetic picture of Good, saying on CNN, “Renee Nicole Good, as you hear her say, she's not mad, she's sitting in her car, peacefully waving cars to get by.”

But let’s not rush to canonize anyone—videos also show Good ignoring orders to exit her car, revving her engine, and driving off, actions that could reasonably alarm any trained agent in a tense situation.

Agent’s Actions Under Scrutiny

The incident unfolded with Ross, a seasoned agent with a decade of service, exiting his vehicle and attempting to open Good’s door, while another officer moved toward the front of the moving SUV.

Omar criticized this maneuver, arguing that trained personnel should avoid placing themselves in harm’s way in front of a moving vehicle—a fair point, though one wonders if split-second decisions in a heated moment allow for textbook precision.

Ross ultimately fired three shots, one through the windshield of Good’s Honda, striking and killing her, a decision federal officials defend as self-defense while the city’s mayor has called it “reckless.”

Community Grief and Political Divide

Good’s wife, Rebecca Good, confronted Ross verbally at the scene, demanding he reveal his face, a raw moment of grief amid a city still scarred by the George Floyd tragedy over five years ago.

President Trump weighed in with characteristic bluntness, insisting Good “behaved horribly” and claiming she ran over Ross, a statement at odds with some video interpretations but reflective of the administration’s firm support for law enforcement.

Minneapolis residents are reeling, caught between mourning a local mother and poet and grappling with yet another controversial act of violence by an authority figure—hardly the healing this city needs.
