Attorney General Merrick Garland announced in a November press release that he was tasking special prosecutor Jack Smith to investigate former President Donald Trump.

Garland explained that the investigation would center on Trump's handling of classified documents as well his alleged role in the 2021 riot on Capitol Hill. However, Trump recently insisted that the real focus should be on his predecessor.

Trump recalls Clinton emails

According to Newsweek, the former president conveyed that message in a series of Truth Social posts this past Wednesday, saying, "Why aren't they asking President Obama what's going on with his Administration?"

"Crooked Hillary took and illegally deleted and acid washed 33,000 Emails AFTER getting a Subpoena for those Emails from the United States Congress, and who knows how many Classified Documents Joe took, especially pertaining to Ukraine and China," he continued.

"Maybe Trump Hating Special 'Prosecutor' Jack Smith, who is doing the dirty work for his Marxist Democrat friends, should do the right thing for our Country!" the former president declared.

Newsweek noted that Trump later followed those comments up with another post in which he complained that the United States "become the Investigation Capital of the World."

"Actually, that's all we do, and it's only good for our many enemies," Trump wrote. "They could not be happier as they brilliantly plot our demise!!!"

Garland's appointment of Smith came just over three months after FBI agents raided Trump's Florida home in search of classified documents.

Special counsel appointed to investigate Biden's handling of documents

While the attorney general has yet to announce any investigation of figures linked to the Obama administration, he did reveal earlier this month that he has appointed a special counsel to look at President Joe Biden's behavior regarding classified material.

The Associated Press reported that Garland held a press conference on January 12 during which he identified former Maryland United States Attorney Robert K. Hur as being in charge of the endeavor.

"This appointment underscores for the public the department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters, and to making decisions indisputably guided only by the facts and the law," the Associated Press quoted Garland as saying.

The news service noted that Hur put out a press release of his own in which he pledged to "conduct the assigned investigation with fair, impartial and dispassionate judgment."

That following public reports that a stash of classified documents had been uncovered at the president's Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, with the discovery occurring just prior to last year's midterm elections.

What's more, additional documents turned up this month as Biden's lawyers went through his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
