A federal judge has ruled that former President Mike Pence must testify before a grand jury related to Jan. 6.

The focus is on conversations he had with former President Donald Trump leading to the day of the Capitol riot.

The announcement

“But the judge said – in a ruling that remains under seal – that Pence can still decline to answer questions related to his actions on January 6 itself, when he was serving as president of the Senate for the certification of the 2020 presidential election, according to one of the sources,” CNN reported.

“Pence still has the ability to appeal. Trump has repeatedly lost executive privilege assertions he’s tried to make in the special counsel’s investigation. It’s another win for special counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating the Trump-aligned effort to subvert the 2020 election," it added.

The impact

"The sealed ruling from U.S. District Judge James "Jeb" Boasberg sets up the unprecedented scenario of a former vice president being compelled to give potentially damaging testimony against the president he once served," Fox 5 reported.

"And it comes as Pence has been inching closer to announcing a run for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, which would put him in direct competition with his former boss," it continued.

"The decision comes days after lawyers for the three parties — Trump, Pence and the Justice Department — were spotted at the U.S. district court in Washington on Thursday ahead of an expected hearing on whether the former vice president would have to comply with [Jack] Smith's subpoena," CBS News stated.

"Appointed in November by Attorney General Merrick Garland, Smith is leading the Justice Department's two investigations involving Trump, including efforts surrounding the 2020 presidential election and attempts to interfere with the counting of Electoral College votes on Jan. 6, 2021," it added.

The latest reports reveal that Pence may sit before a grand jury in an unprecedented move for a former vice president.

The action could also have consequences for his own rumored 2024 campaign.

Pence will also be pressed for details on his former boss which could impact Trump's legal situation.

The drama continues to run high as the former White House leaders face growing legal concerns more than two years after leaving office.
