DANIEL VAUGHAN: Kamala Harris And The Run-Out-The-Clock Strategy
For several weeks, Fox News has run two daily stories on the same topic. The first shows how many days it's been since Kamala Harris last held a press conference or interview. The second shows how many days it is until votes start getting cast in this election. The counter for Harris is getting larger, and the dates until votes are cast are shrinking fast. It's not hard to see the Harris gameplay in those two numbers.
As of August 26, 2024, Kamala Harris has been the nominee for Democrats and hasn't had a press conference, interview, or answer any substantive questions in 36 days. Joe Biden stepping aside at the last second in a historical move, and the reasons behind that haven't gotten a single question.
It's not like there aren't any questions to answer. What part did Harris play in Biden dropping out? Was she part of the Democratic leadership pushing Biden out? And beyond that, what does Harris believe on anything?
We had a clash on this second part over the weekend when Senator Tom Cotton attacked Harris for multiple positions she's taken over the years. One is Harris's support for eliminating private health insurance and kicking everyone off private plans.
ABC News journalist Jon Karl claimed Harris hadn't proclaimed support for that position. Cotton sensibly quoted Harris's direct support in the past, the bills she's sponsored, and raising her hand in the 2019 Democratic Primary debates when asked if she supported eliminating private insurance for government-run health insurance.
Karl cited vague backtracking the current Harris campaign has done. And it's true that we've received plenty of aide commentary and paid hacks claiming Harris doesn't support this, that, or the other. But at no point has Harris ever sat down to explain that, either in an interview or a press conference.
You can't even point to a speech or moment in the entire Democratic National Convention where Harris or anyone else described what Harris believed. Congressional Democrats are running in the opposite direction. In Congress, Democrats are downplaying the price control ideas put out by the Harris campaign.
Price controls over grocery prices are effectively the only policy point Harris claims to believe in so far, and the entire rollout has been an utter disaster.
Never mind, though, this is a campaign of "vibes." That's another word for hot air, fake promises, and handwaving away any discrepancies.
That brings us to the second point: as of August 26, 2024, there are 11 days until the first votes are cast. When you get back from your Labor Day vacation plans, some Americans will return to general election ballots. If you think that's absurd, you're not alone; that's the crazy variety across the 50 states of this national union.
It lays out the simple logic behind the Harris campaign: ride a media high until the general election, answer no questions, and hope the public basement campaign wins.
That's also the logic behind the Harris campaign's attempt to change the debate rules at the last second. The details of muted or unmuted microphones are secondary to the real issue: Both Trump and Harris had already agreed to the terms of the debate, and now she's trying to change those rules and then claim Trump "backed out."
The Harris campaign is doing more to shield her from answering questions than they ever did with Joe Biden. With Biden, though, we know he couldn't physically do that job anymore. Take your pick on why Biden couldn't answer simple questions anymore.
With Harris, there's no medical reason. It's clear that her campaign is terrified of what happens when she opens her mouth. And so it's been 36 days since she's answered any questions after one of the most astonishing election shifts in United States history. The Biden-Harris White House is combining to create one of the least transparent crews we've ever seen.
In the electronic age, where it seems no one has privacy on anything, the White House, the Democratic Party, and the Biden-Harris campaign have created the most secretive set of candidates in U.S. history. What do they believe? Who knows. What's Biden's health status? We'll get back to you on that. No one knows anything, and they refuse to answer questions.
They're right, though. It may win them the White House. And if it does, congratulations to the press, which will have helped install Harris without uttering a peep along the way. It'll be hard to root against the plummeting ratings, readership, and more destroying newsrooms nationwide.
If it fails and Harris loses, they won't have anyone to blame but themselves. They chose to hide from the public and demand fealty at the same time. It's a bizarre strategy, but Democrats are trying to run out the clock.
