Whoopi Goldberg, Charlamagne Tha God clash over Hunter Biden pardon on 'The View'
The women of ABC's The View have long served as each other's own liberal echo chamber, rarely permitting any contrary opinions to make their way into daily discussion, a fact which made an exchange that occurred on Wednesday's episode all the more startling.
During a debate over President Joe Biden's decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, before leaving the White House, co-host Whoopi Goldberg was taken to task by panel guest and popular radio host Charlamagne Tha God, who blasted the move as hypocritical, as Fox News reports.
Charlamagne lets loose
Always ready to tackle political hot topics of the day, the panel and their guest dove into the debate over the presidential pardon, which surprised many with its sweeping nature.
Once it became evident that Goldberg was likely to jump to the defense of Joe Biden on the issue, Charlamagne let his feelings on the subject be known, expressing agreement with those who stood in opposition to the move.
“I think that all of the criticism is valid. Democrats stand on this moral high ground all the time, and, you know, they act so self-righteous. The reality is, he didn't have to say anything in regards to whether or not his son wanted to be pardoned,” Charlamagne stated.
The well-known urban radio personality went on, “He could have said, 'Hey, man, I'm not focused on that right now.' But since they were calling Trump a threat to democracy and saying nobody is above the law, but they were speaking about him, that's what they were running on, so when he kept saying things like... 'Nobody is above the law, I respect the jury's decision, in regards to my son.' He didn't believe that. But he didn't have to volunteer that lie to begin with.”
It was then that things between Charlamagne and Goldberg heated up, with the longtime View co-host suggesting that Biden did not misrepresent the situation to the country as the show's guest implied.
Goldberg fires back
Taking issue with Charlamagne's premise, Goldberg interjected, “I'm going to stop you for a second, only because you don't know that it was a lie.”
Incredulous at the notion advanced by Goldberg, the radio host asked, “You really think he just changed his mind over Thanksgiving weekend, all of the sudden?”
Goldberg answered, “I think he changed his mind because he got sick of watching everybody else get over. At some point you get to the place where you just go, 'So I'm just going to follow the straight and narrow always,' because that's what's expected of Democrats.”
Charlamagne was having none of it, replying, “That's their fault,” in that Democrats continued to proclaim that no one is above the law.”
As Goldberg continued to lambaste Democrats who took issue with the pardon, Charlamagne asked simply, “Why can't you say when Democrats are wrong?” and, though, further back-and-forth prompted him to call his debate partner “ridiculous,” the two eventually made up and embraced on stage.
Democrats pile on
It was not just Charlamagne who had a problem with the Hunter Biden pardon, with a host of other Democrats, from Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Arizona Rep. Greg Stanton to Michigan Sen. Gary Peters making their opinions on the matter quite clear, as the Associated Press notes.
Peters deemed the pardon “an improper se of power” that “emboldens others to bend justice to suit their interests,” and just how severe the continued fallout may be for the Democrats as well as for Joe Biden's presidential legacy, only time will tell.
