Actor Michael Pitt is best known for his portrayal of troubled New Jersey gangster Jimmy Darmody in HBO's "Boardwalk Empire."

However, Pitt recently faced negative attention when he was accused of domestic violence, with one incident allegedly involving a cinder block.

Multiple acts of violence said have occurred

According to the New York Post, Pitt was arrested in New York this past Friday and arraigned on two counts of first-degree sexual abuse as well as other charges.

The charges were brought in response to four incidents which were said to involve the 44-year-old actor and his then-girlfriend at his home in Bushwick between April 2020 and August 2021.

Prosecutors maintain that on one occasion, Pitt groped the woman. This was allegedly followed by other instances in which he sexually assaulted her and beat the woman with a wooden plank.

What's more, authorities also contend that other attacks consisted of Pitt striking the victim with a cinder block and strangling her.

Lawyer blames charges on "uncorroborated word of an unhinged individual"

The Post noted that Pitt has been charged with one count of first-degree criminal sex act, one count of second-degree strangulation, and one count of third-degree criminal sex act, as well as two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree attempted assault.

Pitt entered a not guilty plea to all charges in Brooklyn Supreme Court, with Judge Joanne Quinones setting bail at $15,000.

Cary London is Pitt's defense attorney, and she denied the allegations against her client in a statement provided to the Post.

"Unfortunately, we live in a world where somebody like Mr. Pitt — an accomplished professional who would never so much as contemplate these crimes — can be arrested on the uncorroborated word of an unhinged individual," London stated.

Cary went on to assert that she and Pitt "look forward to proving his innocence through the evidence and not through the media."

Pitt has had previous brushes with the law

The Post pointed out that this is not Pitt's first brush with the law as in July of 2022 he was charged with assault and petty larceny for allegedly hitting a man and stealing his phone.

What's more, Pitt was hospitalized later in the year following an "emotionally disturbed" incident that saw him allegedly throw things at people from the roof of a building.
