Adam Schiff calls for online crackdown on misinformation ahead of election

California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff spent years promoting the since discredited notion that former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia's government to win in 2016.

Yet in what many regard as a hypocritical move, the left-wing lawmaker is now calling for a crackdown on misinformation ahead of this year's presidential election.

Schiff signs letter to heads of social media companies seeking more restrictions

According to Breitbart, that demand came in the form of a letter sent earlier this week by Schiff and other Democrats to the heads of social media companies.

"As the technology on social media platforms rapidly expands, companies must redouble their efforts to combat issues that threaten our democracy," the letter states.

It goes on to press the CEOs on whether their companies will "be changing your election integrity policies between now and the 2024 U.S. general election."

In addition to Schiff, the letter was also signed by Arizona Democratic Rep. Raúl Grijalva, California Democratic Rep. Julia Brownley, Georgia Republican Rep. Henry C. Johnson, California Rep. Doris Matsui, and New York Democratic Rep. Dan Goldman.

House voted along partisan lines last year to censure Schiff

That Schiff would be expressing concern over political misinformation raised eyebrows among critics, including Foundation for Freedom Online executive director Mike Benz.

"From 2019 to 2023, Adam Schiff was the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee," Benz wrote in a social media post on Tuesday. "This censorship call is coming from the top guy in Congress overseeing the CIA."

Fox News reported in June of 2023 that the House of Representatives voted to censure Schiff after a resolution was put forward by Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.

Luna's resolution passed along partisan lines, with all but six Republican members voting in favor of it while every Democrat was opposed.

Luna: "Schiff abused his privileges" by putting out "baseless distortions"

Fox News quoted Luna as saying that "Adam Schiff launched an all-out political campaign built on baseless distortions against a sitting U.S. president."

She asserted that these actions came at "the expense of every single citizen in this country and the honor of the House of Representatives."

The Florida congresswoman further complained that "Schiff abused his privileges, claiming to know the truth while leaving Americans in the dark about his web of lies."
