Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she will impeach all six conservative Supreme Court justices after Trump immunity ruling

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (R-NY) said she will move to impeach the six conservative Supreme Court justices who ruled in favor of the idea that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution for their official acts while in office, even after they leave office.

The 6-3 ruling means that some of the charges against former President Donald Trump--like those stemming from the events of January 6, 2021 when some protesters ostensibly supporting him stormed their way into the Capitol building during vote certification of the 2020 electoral votes--will now be dismissed.

Hard-core leftists like Ocasio-Cortez are exploding with anger at the ruling and the prospect of not being able to see Trump convicted of offenses stemming from his time in office.

"Corruption crisis"

"The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control," she said. "Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture."

"I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return," she added.

The next time Congress will be in session is July 8, after the July 4th holiday and the weekend.

Her impeachment motion will likely not get far given that Democrats are narrowly in the minority in the House.

Trump's response to the ruling was posted on Truth Social. "Big win for our constitution and democracy. Proud to be an American!"

Dropping charges

Trump can now be justified in directing the Justice Department to drop the January 6 case against him, but two of the cases against him are at the state level and the classified documents case against him involves some actions he allegedly took after leaving office.

Ocasio-Cortez was not the only Democrat in the House to speak out against the ruling and talk about taking action against it.

House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) also said his caucus will look into what it can do to combat the ruling.

"House Democrats will engage in aggressive oversight and legislative activity with respect to the Supreme Court to ensure that the extreme, far-right justices in the majority are brought into compliance with the Constitution."

He also said the action makes Trump a king who can do anything, a sentiment echoed by other Democrats, but this is obviously not true as the ruling only applies to actions he takes while in office.
