Hundreds of thousands of South American immigrants currently residing in the US will have their temporary protected status extended, according to an announcement made Friday by the Department of Homeland Security as Biden attempts to derail Trump's plans.

With just over a week to go before Trump assumes the presidency, the Biden administration is attempting one last desperate move to help undocumented immigrants, as The Hill reported.

Despite the program's unclear future under Trump, the administration announced that over 600,000 Venezuelans and over 200,000 Salvadorans currently living in the US would be allowed to stay for another 18 months.

Response from Homeland

It was cited by Homeland Security that there is a "severe humanitarian emergency" in Venezuela under the "Maduro regime," as well as "environmental conditions" in El Salvador, such as large storms, "that prevent individuals from returning."

In spite of a disagreement over the election that lasted for six months and widespread condemnation from around the world, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was sworn in on Friday for a third term that would last for six years.

There is a striking contrast between the policies that Trump has suggested and the renewal of temporary protected status.

Trump's Moves

Trump has made the implementation of tough immigration reform a central component of his agenda for his second term in office.

The forty-seventh president has effectively pledged a full-scale immigration crackdown, which includes fighting birthright citizenship and ordering high-profile ICE raids on undocumented immigrants.

He intends to begin these raids as soon as he takes office of the United States of America.

Other Administration Response

Stephen Miller, Trump's longtime immigration adviser, provided a preview of some of the anticipated policies that the administration will implement in the near future.

The administration's intention was to leverage Title 42, a public health policy that was implemented during the pandemic.

The official also indicated the administration will work to expel immigrants from the country before they can request asylum.

From the Cabinet

Trump's cabinet will also continue construction on Trump's border wall, and to heavily wield the Immigration and Nationality Act in order to allow more state and local law enforcement to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was revealed on Wednesday during a meeting with Senate Republicans.

The fact that Trump has been using anti-illegal immigration ideals for years should be interpreted as evidence of his convictions.
