Biden willing to sign off on TikTok ban

President Joe Biden indicated on Friday that he will sign off on the TikTok ban should it reach his desk.

The Daily Caller reports that Biden said as much to reporters, on Friday, just before he boarded Air Force One en route to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

"If they pass it, I’ll sign it," Biden said.

What Biden is referring to here is the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which has been put forth by U.S. Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) - members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.

Background

There has been much concern about apps - like Tiktok - that are controlled by America's adversaries. TikTok, for example, is owned by ByteDance, which is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. Accordingly, many have argued that this presents a national security threat.

Gallagher and Krishnamoorthi's legislation would address this problem.

"The bill prevents app store availability or web hosting services in the U.S. for ByteDance-controlled applications, including TikTok, unless the application severs ties to entities like ByteDance that are subject to the control of a foreign adversary, as defined by Congress in Title 10," the committee's website explains.

It continues, "In addition, the bill creates a process for the President to designate certain, specifically defined social media applications that are subject to the control of a foreign adversary—per Title 10—and pose a national security risk. Designated applications will face a prohibition on app store availability and web hosting services in the U.S. unless they sever ties to entities subject to the control of a foreign adversary through divestment."

The committee has already voted - unanimously - in favor of the bill, which means that it is now headed to the House floor to be voted on by all representatives.

Looking forward

The bill does have bipartisan support, so it is expected to pass the House. In fact, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is expected to move the bill to the floor this week.

Assuming that the lower chamber does pass the bill, then it will be on to the U.S. Senate. And, it seems very likely that it will at least make it to the Senate floor for a vote.

In other words, there is a good chance that this bill is going to make it to Biden's desk, and, if it does, he has now indicated that he will sign it.

Trump weighs in

Not everyone is on board with the TikTok ban. Former President Donald Trump, in fact, is among those who have voiced concern about it - even though he previously supported such an idea.

Trump recently stated, "If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double their business. I don't want Facebook, who cheated in the last Election, doing better. They are a true Enemy of the People!"
