Sen. Booker explodes on 'complicit' fellow Dems who won't incessantly 'fight' against Trump

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) had another overly dramatic and highly performative "Spartacus" moment on the Senate floor on Tuesday, only this time his tirade was aimed at members of his own Democratic Party.

Booker accused some of his fellow Democratic senators of being "complicit" with President Donald Trump's "authoritarian" administration, and that it was time for Democrats to have a "backbone" and "fight" harder against the Republican president's agenda, Breitbart reported.

The New Jersey Democrat's angry outburst against his Senate comrades stemmed from his objection to a motion from Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) to quickly pass a bipartisan package of law enforcement funding bills.

Booker said his fellow Dems are "complicit" with Trump

Punchbowl News reporter Andrew Desiderio was among the first to report that Sen. Booker was "sparring on the floor" against Sens. Cortez Masto and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), who also strongly supported swift passage of the "police-related bills" that had strong bipartisan support.

Booker wanted to amend the package to ensure that all funds would be equally distributed among law enforcement agencies across the country, which he insisted was necessary to counter the Trump administration's changes to grant programs and cancellation of discretionary grants to certain Democrat-led jurisdictions that openly opposed his policies and executive orders.

"This to me is the problem with Democrats in America right now," Booker exclaimed. "We’re willing to be complicit to Donald Trump, to let this pass through, when we have all the leverage right now there is, to say, 'If you’re as passionate about police as we are, then pass bills out of this body that will help the police officers in Washington, that will help the police officers in Illinois, that will help the police officers in New Jersey.'"

"Don’t be complicit to the President of the United States, who we both know doesn’t understand that language, 'Oh, please, oh, please, don’t hurt blue states,'" he continued in his objection.

Dems "deserve to lose" if they won't "fight" harder against Trump

Sen. Booker was not finished there, though, as he went on to insist that his Democratic Party was in desperate need of "a wake-up call" and "deserve to lose" to Republicans, as he also lamented all of the left-leaning universities, law firms, and corporations that were supposedly "bending a knee" and paying "tribute" to President Trump.

"It’s time for Democrats to have a backbone. It’s time for us to fight. It’s time for us to draw lines," Booker shouted, as if that wasn't exactly what Democrats have been doing nonstop in opposition to Trump for the past 10 years.  "And, when it comes to the safety of my state being denied these grants, that’s why I’m standing here."

"Don’t question my integrity. Don’t question my motives," the senator added indignantly. "I’m standing for Jersey, I am standing for my police officers, I’m standing for the Constitution, and I’m standing for what’s right."

Booker's fellow Dems "are pissed"

CBS News reported that Sen. Cortez Masto responded to Sen. Booker's "ridiculous" accusations by noting that he, as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, had voted to approve the bipartisan package of law enforcement-related bills just a few weeks earlier, and suggested that he should have raised his concerns and put forward his proposed amendment at that time.

Likewise, Sen. Klobuchar pointed out that Booker skipped the committee's markup hearing, during which he could have proposed his amendment, and said, "I can't help it if someone couldn't change their schedule to be there."

The Minnesota senator further revealed that her New Jersey colleague has objected to her pro-police bills in the past, before President Trump returned to office, and added, "One of the things I don't understand here is that we have committees for a reason, and we have hearings for a reason. And you can't do one thing on Police Week, and not show up and not object and let these bills go through, and then say another a few weeks later on the floor."

Meanwhile, Punchbowl News reporter Desiderio added to his initial reporting about Booker's tirade with a follow-up X post that said, "The texts I’m getting from Dems about this right now. Hooooo boy. People are pissed at Booker. Booker is still laying into Democrats on the floor, practically yelling."
