California mayor exposes Gov. Newsom's sanctuary policies
One California mayor is not happy with the way Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is handling the state's illegal immigration problem.
Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neill recently spoke with Fox 11 about the situation.
He did so, according to the outlet, "after federal authorities located 21 migrants on a boat near Newport Thursday evening."
O'Neill actually went so far as to publicly tell Newsom to "get his act together."
Here is what happened:
The 21 individuals were apprehended by the United States Coast Guard just off the coast of Newport Beach, California, on Thursday evening. The came after officials noticed a suspicious boat about a mile away from the shore.
U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Levi Read revealed, "We come across boats on a regular basis. Not all the time do they have that many people on it though."
This time, however, it did. Fox 11 reports, "Eighteen of the migrants were Mexican nationals, two from Uzbekistan, and one Russian national."
This is not the first incident of its kind. In fact, there have been at least three.
"In May, FOX 11 reported on another incident in Newport Habor also involving migrants. In that case, cellphone video showed more than 20 suspected migrants walking onto a pier and scattering into town," the outlet reports.
"Get your act together"
O'Neill spoke with the press following the incident, the New York Post reports.
He said:
There’s no way you intend on trying to protect Uzbeki nationals coming in from our southern border. Get your act together, figure this out, because we’re having real problems affecting real people, in your cities all across California. You cannot continue to treat every city in California like a border city. You cannot put us in this position. We have real problems, and we need you to fix them now.
O'Neill argued that it was California's "sanctuary" policies that are allowing these incidents to take place.
He said:
When you have people from Uzbekistan, of all places, coming in through the southern border, something is broken. Every city in California now is essentially a border city thanks to SB 54. We’re told our local authorities are prohibited from working with federal authorities from stopping people like this.
President-Elect Donald Trump ran for the presidency on the promise to fix the southern border crisis that has exploded under the Biden-Harris administration's watch. Trump plans to follow through on this promise, but some Democratic governors, including Newsom, have vowed to do all that they can to oppose Trump.
