Chief Justice John Roberts issues warning to Americans about preserving 'judicial independence'

At the end of each year, the chief justice of the United States Supreme Court issues a year-end report, usually touching on a particularly important subject.

This year, Chief Justice John Roberts focused primarily on two subjects, which included a warning to officials regarding ignoring Supreme Court decisions and for the United States to maintain "judicial independence," Fox News reported.

The warning came in his 15-page annual report on the federal judiciary, sort of a "state of the judiciary" summary and what he believes to be the most important topics on which to focus.

Roberts also warned of increasing violence and threats against judges and justices, of which there has been a noticeable uptick in recent years.

What did he say?

The chief justice held nothing back in warning America to maintain its judicial independence, as it's a cornerstone of what makes the USA the great country that it is.

"It is not in the nature of judicial work to make everyone happy. Most cases have a winner and a loser. Every Administration suffers defeats in the court system — sometimes in cases with major ramifications for executive or legislative power or other consequential topics," Roberts wrote.

"Nevertheless, for the past several decades, the decisions of the courts, popular or not, have been followed, and the Nation has avoided the standoffs that plagued the 1950s and 1960s."

He went on to say that recently, some decisions have been increasingly ignored, particularly by elected officials.

"Within the past few years, however, elected officials from across the political spectrum have raised the specter of open disregard for federal court rulings," he wrote.

Roberts did not name any specific elected officials, but many believe he was possibly referring to President Joe Biden and possibly President-elect Donald Trump.

"Dangerous suggestions"

The chief justice continued by calling the idea of ignoring decisions from the high court "dangerous," while also invoking the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

"These dangerous suggestions, however sporadic, must be soundly rejected. Judicial independence is worth preserving. As my late colleague Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote, an independent judiciary is ‘essential to the rule of law in any land,’ yet it ‘is vulnerable to assault; it can be shattered if the society law exists to serve does not take care to assure its preservation.’"

He added, "I urge all Americans to appreciate this inheritance from our founding generation and cherish its endurance."

Only time will tell if elected officials heed his warning.
