Democrat suggests he would be willing to join a Trump administration
Much to the dismay of Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats, U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) recently suggested that he would be willing to serve in a Republican White House administration.
Fox News reports that Phillips told the outlet as much during the recently-held Democratic National Convention, where Harris was named the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.
The reader may remember that, back when President Joe Biden was still seeking reelection, Phillips mounted a challenge to Biden by launching his own presidential campaign.
Phillips's campaign did not get too far, given the tight grip that Democratic Party leaders have on the situation - as was recently exemplified by the removal of Biden and the installment of Harris. Phillips, though, has not given up his hope of serving in the White House.
"I'm glad he did"
Phillips spoke with Fox about why it is that he challenged Biden in the first place.
He said:
I didn’t want to run this cycle. I spent two years trying to call attention to something I was seeing clearly with my own eyes. I remember my Republican buddies excoriating Donald Trump quietly behind closed doors and then praising him in front of cameras. I saw my Democratic colleagues doing the same thing about Joe Biden, who we knew was in decline, probably going to lose.
As may already be evidence, Phillips has attempted to portray himself as more of a centrist politician.
Phillips went on to say that, although he did not want to run for the presidency, he did so because "it became evident that our political culture punishes courage, rewards cowardice and silence."
"But the message was to try to be a Paul Revere — not a George Washington. It took someone to hand over power, like Joe Biden did, to really make it happen. I’m glad he did," the congressman said.
"If there is a way . . ."
Phillips went on to suggest that he would be willing to serve in either a potential Harris administration or even - to the surprise of many - in a potential Trump administration.
"This was not about running for president. This was about showing people that it is never too late, and you should sit up and stand up and do something when you feel that something is wrong. And I did that," the congressman said.
He added, "If there is a way to serve my country in a Democratic administration — in a Republican administration — my goodness, we should all stand up and accept that invitation whenever it is issued. So, you never know."
It is unclear whether either former President Donald Trump or Harris is interested in having Phillips in their administration.
Based on what Phillips told Fox, it would appear that he is not far enough to the political left to be hired by Harris.
