Interesting things have happened in the wake of the expulsion of Rep. George Santos last week. 

According to Politico, his expulsion has renewed calls for a similar fate for Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) from unexpected places -- his own party members.

One of those calling for Menendez to be ousted from Congress is Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, who recently made clear that he believes the New Jersey senator should be subject to the same consequences, especially given that his circumstances are worse than Santos'.

Menendez has already been indicted on three bribery-related charges, but has refused to step down despite growing calls for him to do so.

Fetterman speaks

To the surprise of many, Fetterman took a hardline stance against Menendez remaining in Congress, especially after Santos was expelled so easily for arguably less.

Fetterman made the surprise demand during his Friday interview on ABC’s "The View," making it crystal clear that the New Jersey senator needs to be held accountable in the same way Santos was.

"Senator Menendez needs to go, and if you are going to expel Santos, how can you allow somebody like Menendez to remain in the Senate?" Fetterman asked.

He added, "He has the right for his day in court and all that but he doesn’t have the right to have those kinds of votes and things that — that’s not a right. And I think we need to make that kind of decision to send him out."

Fetterman added that he believes Menendez "is really a senator for Egypt, not New Jersey."

Fetterman's take on the matter was widely praised across social media.

One X user wrote, "Fetterman's political career is doomed..He is being fair conscientious and honest. They won't tolerate that crap on EITHER side!"

Another X user added, "At least he points out there are two sets of standards."

Only time will tell if the pressure builds to the point where Menendez resigns. If not, he'll likely face the same expulsion threat.
