Georgia state prosecutor to investigate Lt. Gov. after disqualification of Fani Willis

The Washington Examiner reported this past week that a state prosecutor has been appointed in connection with an investigation of Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Burt Jones' conduct following the 2020 election.

That move comes just over two years after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was disqualified from investigating Jones.

Willis attended fundraiser for Jones' Democratic opponent

The Examiner revealed in July of 2022 that Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled on a motion put forward by Jones asking that Willis be excluded from the case.

The motion argued that Willis could not act impartially as she had previously attended a fundraiser put on by Jones' Democratic opponent, Charlie Bailey.

McBurney agreed with that reasoning, stating, "An investigation of this significance, garnering the public attention it necessarily does and touching so many political nerves in our society, cannot be burdened by legitimate doubts about the District Attorney’s motives."

"The District Attorney does not have to be apolitical, but her investigations do. The Bailey fundraiser she sponsored — in her official capacity — makes that impossible when it comes to investigating Bailey’s direct political opponent," he continued.

Lt. Gov. says Willis has "made a mockery of this legal process"

"Any decision the District Attorney makes about Senator Jones in connection with the grand jury investigation is necessarily infected by it," the judge went on to add.

The Examiner noted on Thursday that Jones' investigation will be overseen by Peter Skandalakis, who serves as executive director for the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council of Georgia.

For his part, Jones provided a statement to the Examiner in which he spoke of looking forward to the "quick resolution" of this matter.

The lieutenant governor went on to slam Willis for having "made a mockery of this legal process," adding, "I'm happy to see this process move forward and look forward to the opportunity to get this charade behind me."

DOJ investigating alleged misuse of federal funds in Willis' office

Meanwhile, Willis' name was in the news on Wednesday after The Washington Free Beacon reported that the Department of Justice has uncovered "inconsistencies" in how federal funds were used in her office.

"During our review of the award to respond to this inquiry, we have noticed some inconsistencies in what Fulton County has reported to [the Federal Subaward Reporting System] and we are working with them to update their reporting accordingly," a Justice Department spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

What's more, the Free Beacon has released an audio recording from a 2021 meeting between Willis and a whistleblower who accused a campaign staffer of trying to misappropriate money marked for youth gang prevention efforts.
