Harris joins Trump in opposing sale of US Steel to Japanese firm

Vice President Kamala Harris was mocked earlier this year for embracing former President Donald Trump's proposal to exempt tips from taxation despite other Democrats having previously condemned the idea.

Harris has since adopted another one of her opponent's positions, with Just the News noting how she agrees with Trump that the sale of US Steel to Japan's Nippon Steel should be called off.

Trump: "I will stop Japan from buying United States Steel"

Reuters reported that Trump voiced opposition to the acquisition of US Steel by foreign buyers while addressing rally-goers at a campaign rally in York, Pennsylvania last month.

"I will stop Japan from buying United States Steel," the former president pledged before adding, "They shouldn't be allowed to buy it."

Trump also pledged that he would eliminate new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations promulgated this year which aim to eliminate 1 billion metric tons worth of greenhouse gas emissions by 2047.

He called the rules "a disaster for our country," declaring that "[i]nstead of shutting down power plants, we will open dozens and dozens more, and they'll happen fast."

J.D. Vance: US Steel is "a critical piece of America’s defense industrial base"

Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance is Trump's running mate, and he has publicly opposed US Steel's sale since the deal was first announced in December.

"Today, a critical piece of America’s defense industrial base was auctioned off to foreigners for cash," Vance said in a statement.

"I warned of this outcome months ago and will oppose it in the months ahead. U.S. Steel announced the sale by celebrating the ‘certain and immediate value’ to be delivered to its shareholders," the senator asserted.

"But rest assured that I will interrogate the long-term implications for the American people, and I will do everything in my power to protect the future of our nation's security, industry, and workers," Vance stressed.

Union says sale "sells out the future for workers"

Meanwhile, Vox suggested in an article published on Thursday that Trump and Harris' mutual opposition to Nippon Steel's purchase of US Steel stems from a common desire for support from organized labor.

The United Steelworkers union (USW) put out a statement on September 4 which claimed that "the merger sells out the future for workers, retirees, and communities and jeopardizes our nation’s ability to produce the melted, poured and finished steel products that we need for our national defense and critical supply chains."

"U.S. Steel would hold no value, would not be world-class, without the hard work and tireless dedication of generations of USW-represented Steelworkers. As long as we remain united in solidarity, we will KEEP U.S. STEEL U.S.-OWNED," it added.
