The fallout within the ranks of the U.S. Secret Service in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump is still playing out within the halls of Congress.

According to Fox News, a high-ranking Secret Service official is now being urged to retire in the wake of the attempt on Trump's life, as investigations detail the failures that led to the assassin taking a shot at the former president at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally earlier this year.

A source with knowledge of the internal investigation of the government agency confirmed the bombshell news to Fox News.

The official being pressured to step down is Assistant Director Michael Plati of the agency's Office of Protective Operations.

What's going on?

Plati led the section responsible for planning protection for Trump at the rally.

He's also in charge of planning protection details for President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Sen. JD Vance and others.

He will reportedly be stepping down at the end of this week, marking his 27th year at the agency, according to Fox News' source within the agency.

Not surprisingly, the Secret Service denied that Plati was asked to step down, despite reports at the highest level of the internal investigation that told Fox News otherwise.

The agency said that Plati "was not asked to resign or retire by anyone. This was a personal decision that he has made and we thank him for his 27 years of dedicated service to the federal government."

Social media responds

Users across social media weighed in on the report of Plati's retirement announcement and whether or not he was asked to step down or made the decision himself.

"ONLY arrests and treason charges against anyone involved in President Trump's assassination attempt will suffice!" one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "They should have just fired him, no resignation. This should also just be the start of many other 'resignations.'"

Only time will tell if additional Secret Service officials will be held accountable for the failures on that tragic day.
