Alabama residents were shocked this past weekend after a high school football player died following an on-field injury.

According to Fox News, Morgan Academy junior quarterback Caden Tellier sustained a serious head injury while playing in a game on Friday against Southern Academy.

"Caden loved the Lord with all his heart"

The network explained that while Tellier was airlifted to University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, he ultimately passed away on Saturday evening.

"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with his Lord and Savior," Morgan Academy headmaster Bryan Oliver was quoted as saying in a statement.

Oliver recalled how "Caden loved the Lord with all his heart and was a shining light every day he graced the halls of Morgan Academy."

"He was a student, a friend, an athlete and, most important, a Christ follower," Oliver continued before adding, "There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family.

The headmaster pledged that the school "will come together and support Jamie, Arsella and Lyla with our whole hearts" and "offer our deepest sympathy to the Telliers' extended family as well."

Alabama Independent School Association offers support

"I want to thank all the schools and individuals that have reached out during this difficult time," Oliver remarked as he drew to a close. "Caden will never be forgotten for who he was and what he means to Morgan Academy."

Michael McLendon serves as executive director of the Alabama Independent School Association, and he released a statement of his own.

"As a small school, Morgan Academy feels this tragedy even more deeply, and the Alabama Independent School Association is here to offer any support and resources needed to support them as they grieve," he wrote.

Growing concerns about football head injuries

"We ask that our entire AISA family and the people of Alabama join us in prayer for peace and comfort for Caden's family and the Morgan Academy community as they navigate this difficult time of mourning," McLendon stressed.

Time magazine reported earlier this year that there is growing concern about the potential for serious head injuries among high school football players.

It pointed to a recent study that concluded that young athletes risk developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) after experiencing concussions.
