Failed 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton still holds sway over many Democratic voters and she has attempted to wield that influence over the outcome of elections in New York.

Clinton just endorsed the congressional bid of Democratic State Sen. John Mannion, who is vying to flip a Republican-held district in central New York that could prove "crucial" to which major party controls the House, according to CNY Central.

An endorsement from the former secretary of State, U.S. senator, and first lady appeared to still carry weight with voters less than two months ago when she backed a relatively moderate candidate who successfully challenged a progressive leftist incumbent in the Empire State's Democratic primary in June.

Clinton endorses Mannion

CNY reported that former Sec. Clinton said in a statement on Friday, "I'm proud to endorse New York State Senator John Mannion for Congress in NY-22. Flipping this seat is crucial to reclaiming the House and protecting democracy for all Americans, and John is an excellent candidate."

"His background is as a science teacher, union leader, and state senator. He's got a strong record of defending reproductive rights, creating jobs, and advocating for the environment," she added. "All of this makes him the perfect fit to represent Central New York and the Mohawk Valley in Congress. Get out there and vote to ensure a brighter future for NY-22 and beyond!"

A similar but more truncated message was posted on social media by Clinton and was subsequently shared by Sen. Mannion as he accepted the endorsement from the former standard-bearer of the Democratic Party.

In an X post, Mannion wrote, "Hillary Clinton is unwavering in her commitment to protecting and improving the lives of women, children, and families. I’ll always fight to do the same for the people of NY-22. With so much on the line in November, I’m grateful for Secretary Clinton’s support."

According to the Cook Political Report, New York's 22nd Congressional District, despite being currently held by incumbent Rep. Brandon Williams (R-NY), is rated as a D+3 "lean Democrat" seat in the House.

Clinton endorsed Latimer over Bowman in contentious primary fight

Former Sec. Clinton already proved in June that her opinion on candidates still matters to Democratic voters, or at least that she knows how to pick winners, when she aligned herself with the eventual victor in New York's hard-fought Democratic primary election for the 16th Congressional District.

Clinton backed Westchester County Executive George Latimer in his bid to unseat progressive "Squad" member and incumbent Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) in what was the most expensive House primary race in history, according to CNN.

Latimer, a relatively moderate and popular career politician, defeated the leftist former school principal Bowman in a bitter campaign that featured accusations of racism from both sides as well as a clear split in opinions on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

Clintons endorsed VP Harris

More recently, Clinton was joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, as they collectively threw their weight behind Vice President Kamala Harris with an endorsement of her to replace President Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee, according to WNBC.

"We are honored to join the President in endorsing Vice President Harris and will do whatever we can to support her," the Clintons said in a statement, and added, "Now is the time to support Kamala Harris and fight with everything we've got to elect her. America's future depends on it."

Should Harris ultimately obtain the Democratic nomination later this month, she will face off in November against Clinton's 2016 nemesis, former President Donald Trump, who is the Republican nominee for the third election cycle in a row.
