Former President Donald Trump made headlines this past weekend when he faced his second assassination attempt in just eight weeks.

Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Vance spoke with Trump via telephone shortly after the incident, and he said the former president was furious about having his golf game interrupted. 

Trump "p---ed off" over not being able to finish a birdie putt

According to the New York Post, Vance recounted the conversation on Monday evening while speaking to attendees at an event hosted by the Georgia Faith & Freedom Coalition.

Vance explained that he received a call just 10 minutes after Secret Service agents identified the would-be assassin's rifle poking out of some bushes on Trump's golf course.

"JD, you’re not going to believe this, but they tried to do it again," the Republican lawmaker quoted his running mate as saying.

While Vance initially responded by saying, "‘No, you're joshing me. But, what's going on here, sir?" the former president made clear that he was being serious.

"I was playing golf and the Secret Service found somebody who was trying to shoot me," Trump stated before adding that he was "p---ed off" over not being able to finish a birdie putt.

Alleged gunman has long criminal history, ties to Ukraine

Fox News reported that the assassination attempt was allegedly carried out by Ryan Routh, a man whose criminal record dates back to the 1980s.

The network also revealed that he is a pro-Ukrainian activist who spent time living in the former Soviet country and attempted to recruit veterans from Afghanistan to help Ukraine with its war against Russia.

"The question as far as why I'm here … to me, a lot of the other conflicts are gray, but this conflict is definitely black and white," Routh previously told Newsweek.

"This is about good versus evil. This is a storybook, you know, any movie we've ever watched, this is definitely evil against good," he added.

Vance blames Democratic rhetoric

In addition to speaking about his call with Trump, Vance also suggested that left-wing rhetoric is putting the former president's life in danger.
