South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson hospitalized after suffering 'stroke-like symptoms'
A member of Congress was rushed to a nearby hospital on Tuesday after suffering a medical emergency during an event in Washington D.C.
Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) was hospitalized after he reportedly collapsed at the event and required medical attention, Fits News reported.
Though unconfirmed, it is believed that the South Carolina congressman potentially suffered a stroke, based on a statement from his son.
Congressman hospitalized
Early Tuesday evening, a national reporter revealed that Rep. Wilson had collapsed at an event and required medical attention, which was soon confirmed with Wilson's campaign staff by South Carolina reporter Joseph Bustos.
Bustos said in an X post, "Wilson’s congressional campaign confirmed this report and tells me the event was in DC and Wilson is in the hospital. No other information is available."
That was further confirmed when, about an hour later, Wilson's official X account posted, "Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC."
Wilson "experienced stroke-like symptoms"
While the congressman and his campaign were initially vague on the details of what occurred, the New York Post reported that Rep. Wilson's son revealed later on social media that his father was hospitalized with "stroke-like symptoms."
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said in an X post, "I just spoke to my mom who is currently at the hospital with my father. Doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms."
"I was able to speak with him moments ago and I am incredibly thankful that he is stable and being monitored by medical professionals," the son added.
Recently returned to D.C. from overseas travel, campaigning for re-election
The Post, citing other sources, reported that Rep. Wilson had been at a Ukrainian Independence Day celebration when the medical emergency occurred and was initially treated at the scene by a doctor who was in attendance.
Earlier in the day, Wilson had been observed joking with reporters after participating in two series of votes in the House, which just reconvened a day earlier after the month-long summer break for Congress.
Wilson had stayed busy during that break with work-related trips to the Philippines, Australia, and Europe, as well as with his re-election campaign in his home district in South Carolina, which he has represented since 2001.
Colleagues offer prayers of support
The Post noted that in response to the news of Rep. Wilson's hospitalization, other members of South Carolina's delegation to Washington D.C. spoke out in his support, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who said, "Praying for a full and speedy recovery for my friend."
Likewise, Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said in a statement on social media, "Prayers up for Congressman Wilson and his family tonight. Have spoken to the family and I ask we all send a positive vibe and a prayer his way tonight and may he recover as fast as humanly possible."
