The Associated Press reports that Michael Cohen, the one-time attorney of former President Donald Trump, has settled the lawsuit that he had brought against the Trump Organization.

Cohen did so just before the case was about to go to trial.

The lawsuit

According to The Hill, Cohen, in the lawsuit, claimed that the Trump Organization owed him $1.3 million.

The Hill reports:

Cohen filed the lawsuit in 2019, arguing he struck an oral agreement with the Trump Organization to be paid for his attorneys’ fees and costs arising from his work on behalf of the company, only for the Trump Organization to refuse reimbursement once Cohen turned against Trump.

The work, according to CBS News, included "defending Trump and himself during investigations in 2017 and 2018, and during roughly 20 meetings with the Manhattan district attorney and a grand jury before Trump was indicted in March."

Cohen claimed that the Trump Organization stopped paying him when Cohen decided to turn against Trump with regard to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of alleged Trump-Russia collusion. Not only did Cohen turn on Trump in this investigation, but Cohen has also become one of Trump's chief public critics.

It is when the Trump Organization stopped paying him that Cohen decided to take the organization to court for the alleged unpaid legal fees.

It's over

The lawsuit was just about to go to trial, and, as part of his case, Cohen planned to call Donald Trump Jr. as a witness - considering that Trump Jr. is the Trump Organization's executive vice president.

But, the lawsuit has now been settled.

The Associated Press reports:

Lawyers for the two sides disclosed the settlement during a video conference with the judge Friday, three days before Cohen’s 2019 lawsuit was slated to go to trial in a Manhattan state court.

The particulars of the settlement have not been revealed.

Statements

Lauren Handelsman, Cohen's, put out a statement on Friday saying that the case "has been resolved in a manner satisfactory to all parties." But, Handelsman refused to speak about any of the details of the settlement, calling those details confidential.

At the time of this writing, neither former President Trump nor the Trump Organization has released a statement on the settlement.

This will not be Trump's last run-in with Cohen. It is expected that Cohen will be one of special counsel Jack Smith's top witnesses in the case that Smith, on behalf of President Joe Biden's Department of Justice (DOJ), has brought against Trump.
