Michelle Obama rushes to defend Gus Walz from ill-informed online mockery of emotional DNC moment

Democrats, after years of mercilessly mocking and making crude insinuations about former first son Barron Trump, are now beyond outraged after some right-wing figures cracked jokes online about Gus Walz, the developmentally disabled son of Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Now former first lady Michelle Obama has entered the fray to defend the younger Walz from the jokes made about his emotional appearance Wednesday as his father accepted the VP nomination at the Democratic National Convention, according to USA Today.

Lost amid all of the Democratic and media brouhaha over the incident is that most of those who made admittedly insensitive remarks about Gus were unaware at the time of his disabilities and, in most instances, quickly deleted their posts and apologized in some form after learning of them.

Michelle Obama weighs in

During Gov. Walz's acceptance speech at the DNC on Wednesday, cameras caught his son Gus, 17, becoming overwhelmed with emotion as he tearfully shouted, "I love you, Dad!" and also pointed and yelled with pride, "That's my dad!"

While the overwhelming majority of Americans enjoyed or had no problem with the emotional display, USA Today reported separately that some right-leaning figures did comment on the viral moment with at-times crude humor, which instantly sparked sharp recriminations and claims of bullying.

Though, as noted, most of the jokesters were not initially aware that Gus suffers from multiple developmental disabilities, and upon learning of his issues took action to delete the mocking posts and express their regret and sorrow for making fun of his behavior.

Enter former first lady Obama, who said the next day in an X post, "I was touched to see Gus Walz’s joy when his dad @Tim_Walz took the stage last night. Thankful for you showing us all what real love looks like, Gus."

"Let’s be a nation that embraces this kind of warmth and vulnerability, instead of making fun or mocking it," she added. "We could all use some of Gus’s example in our own lives."

Parents reveal multiple developmental disorders

According to an exclusive report from People magazine, Gov. Walz and his wife Gwen only recently opened up earlier this month about the fact that their son Gus has been diagnosed with a non-verbal learning disorder, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder, and an anxiety disorder -- information that until now had not been widely known.

"When our youngest Gus was growing up, it became increasingly clear that he was different from his classmates. Gus preferred video games and spending more time by himself," the Walzs said. "When he was becoming a teenager, we learned that Gus has a non-verbal learning disorder in addition to an anxiety disorder and ADHD, conditions that millions of Americans also have."

"Like so many American families, it took us time to figure out how to make sure we did everything we could to make sure Gus would be set up for success as he was growing up," they continued. "It took time, but what became so immediately clear to us was that Gus’ condition is not a setback -- it’s his secret power."

The parents went on to insist that their son "is brilliant, hyper-aware of details that many of us pass by, and above all else, he’s an excellent son and brother to his sibling." They added, "We love our Gus. We are proud of the man he’s growing into, and we are so excited to have him with us on this journey."

Where was this support when Barron was getting bullied?

To be sure, had Gus Walz's developmental disabilities been more widely known before his emotional breakdown during his father's acceptance speech at the DNC, it is a safe bet that there would have been little or no mockery of the moment.

That said, given the seemingly unending stream of leftist bullying and hatred aimed over the years at Barron Trump, as well as the children of other prominent Republican figures, it would have been nice to see the swift outpouring of support for them from the same people who are now condemning those who bullied Gus.
