NH Gov. Sununu 'leaning toward' not seeking reelection

New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu (R) recently suggested that he will probably not seek reelection.

Sununu, according to Fox News, indicated as much during an appearance Friday on the Boston radio station WEEI.

There, he said, "I haven't firmly made the decision that I’m not going to run. I'm not leaning towards it."

Sununu said that he plans to "talk to the family about it and see what we do." And, he also said that "no one has ever been a five-term governor in New Hampshire" and that he is "not here to break records — but I could."

Background

Sununu recently made national headlines when he tested the waters for a run at the U.S. presidency in 2024. But, he ultimately decided against launching a 2024 presidential campaign.

So, the question has turned to whether or not he is going to seek reelection as the governor of New Hampshire.

Sununu has won the New Hampshire governorship four consecutive times now: once in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022.

The first couple of times it was a bit of a struggle. In 2018, for example, Sununu only won by a single-digit margin of victory. In 2020, however, he overwhelmingly won, and, in 2022, he also won by double-digits.

So, as Sununu said in his WEEI interview, the chances are that he would probably be able to win again in 2024, earning him a fifth consecutive term as governor, which would be a record in New Hampshire. But, it appears that Sununu is planning to move on.

"I've got to get a real job"

In his WEEI interview, Sununu said, "I’ve got kids to put through college and all that sort of thing" and that "someone else needs to kind of take the mantle."

Sununu has said similar things in recent months.

In April, for example, Sununu said, "I’m not saying I’m not running again, but you know ... I’ve gotta get a real job."

With language like this, it really does appear that Sununu is going to leave politics behind. But, nothing is definite yet. It is also unclear what type of "real job" Sununu would pursue.

In the meantime, there are some New Hampshire Republicans who are gearing up to "take the mantle" should Sununu decide to call it quits. The Republicans include Kelly Ayotte, the former state attorney general and former senator, Chuck Morse, the former state senate president, and Frank Edelblut, the man who almost beat Sununu in the 2016 GOP gubernatorial primary and who since has been Sununu's education commissioner.
