Notoriously ugly building named after Nancy Pelosi
A notoriously ugly federal building is being renamed after Nancy Pelosi, a dubious honor for the lifelong career politician whose party just suffered a historic defeat.
Local San Francisco bigwigs like ex-mayor Willie Brown flocked to the Speaker Nancy Pelosi Federal Building to honor Pelosi on Monday morning.
The building's renaming was a gift to Pelosi tucked away in a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill that Democrats pushed through Congress as she prepared to give up the Speaker's gavel in 2022.
Pelosi's gift
The 18-story, 234-foot monstrosity was formerly known as the San Francisco Federal Building. While not pleasing to the eye, the "sustainable" edifice pays tribute to the progressive green agenda Pelosi has long championed. The office tower is designed to be lit with 80% natural lighting.
While lauded for its "green" design, this monument to Pelosi's ambition has become a hotspot for criminals and vagrants.
Some federal workers in the building reported being threatened with knives and at least one corpse was found outside the building last year, the San Francisco Standard reported.
A U.S. Department of Health and Human Service drafted last year urged employees to consider working from home because of the danger.
The Pelosi building is situated across the street from the beautiful, classically designed Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
A fitting tribute
During his first term, Trump cited the San Francisco Federal Building's displeasing appearance in an executive order promoting classical architecture.
Trump criticized the modern style of the building as typical of the navel gazing "elite."
"GSA selected an architect to design the San Francisco Federal Building who describes his designs as 'art-for-art’s-sake' architecture, intended primarily for architects to appreciate. While elite architects praised the resulting building, many San Franciscans consider it one of the ugliest structures in their city," the executive order read.
Pelosi was present for the unveiling of a new sign outside the building on Monday. She was honored by local bigwigs like onetime mayor and former Kamala Harris sugar daddy Willie Brown.
An icon of the left, Pelosi has represented San Francisco in Congress since 1987. One could call her new building a fitting tribute to her liberal legacy, which has helped to make once beautiful places like San Francisco ugly, unsafe, and unfit for living.
Despite Trump's thunderous comeback - which left Pelosi visibly moping and in tears - the 84-year-old is seeking another term in 2026.
