Only 37 percent of Democrats support Biden: poll

As he seeks re-election, President Biden is burdened with questions about his age, mounting evidence of family corruption and a remarkably soft base of support. A new poll finds that just 37 percent of Democrats support him when given several choices of candidates.

The I&I/TIPP Poll also found that Biden is less popular among Democrats than Donald Trump is among Republicans.

There's some good news for Biden: as unenthusiastic as they might be about him, Democrats don't seem to have an alternative they like better.

Biden's base weakens

Michelle Obama, who has long dismissed any hint of presidential ambitions, was the only other Democrat to receive double digits, with 10 percent saying they would back her.

Gavin Newsom, who has been much in the news lately as a possible Biden alternative, received only 4 points.

Biden's support rises when the field is narrowed to only the declared primary candidates. In that case, Biden has 68 percent support, while Robert F. Kennedy Jr. receives 12 percent, and Marianne Williamson receives 4 percent.

The poll was taken from May 31 to June 2, among 638 Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents, with a 4 percent margin of error.

Meanwhile, "Republicans show far greater support for Trump than Biden’s Democratic supporters show for him," the poll found.

In a crowded field, Trump boasts a 36-point lead over his closest rival, Ron DeSantis (R), with 55 percent backing Trump and 19 percent supporting DeSantis.

Coronation continues

For now, at least, there is no sign the Democratic party machine is prepared to abandon the coronation of its 80-year-old figurehead.

While the rest of the country looks on with a mixture of skepticism and horror, Democrats have been furiously rationalizing the obvious about Biden's feeble condition and shutting down debates.

As much as they would like a coronation, there are some factors that won't be under the party's control.

Far-left socialist professor Cornel West has just announced he is seeking the presidency as a third-party candidate, which could potentially draw votes away from Biden, and some contend that Kennedy should not be dismissed as a threat.

While it appears likely that Biden will be the nominee, his weaknesses have led many, including Trump, to speculate that the former president's arrest on federal charges this week was a politically motivated act of desperation.
